Focus on TEL: Institutes

The two institutes described below are part of the physical grouping of units with a focus on various aspects of teaching, learning and research located in Room 1020 of the TEL Building.

The York/Seneca Technology Enhanced Learning Institute (TELi)

The Technology Enhanced Learning institute (TELi) is a partnership of Seneca College and York University that fosters, facilitates and encourages innovative, collaborative approaches to transforming teaching and learning through the use of technology.

Building on York's and Seneca's existing expertise in education, technology, and digital media, the institute will foster leading edge research, development and evaluation of a new generation of technologies and applications that will enable educators to enhance primary, secondary and post-secondary education, as well as lifelong learning. TELi projects will focus on the impact of emerging technologies (broadly defined) on curricula, teaching and learning, and the building of new infrastructures.

TELi will facilitate, enhance and showcase innovative collaborative projects that build on multidisciplinary and complementary strengths at Seneca and York, private and public partnerships, and other post-secondary institutions. Existing service units at York and Seneca will provide supporting services for these projects.

Institute for Research on Learning Technologies (IRLT)

IRLT is a York University Senate approved research unit overseen by the Office of the Vice-President (Research and Innovation), originally established in 1987 within the Faculty of Education as the Centre for the Study of Computers in Education and re-named in June 2001. IRLT encourages the formation of links with faculty members across the University and with schools, government, and industry to provide collaborative, multidisciplinary approaches to research problems and issues. It has a broad mandate to engage in systematic inquiry, discussion, and information sharing related to the pedagogical uses of technology at all levels.
Goals

  • To engage in research, study, and public discussion of issues related to the pedagogical uses of computers and to the moral, ethical, and educational implications of their use
  • To undertake major research projects in theme areas that are consistent with its general mandate
  • To maintain an active program to disseminate findings of its projects, its activities, and developments in the field to educators and other interested parties
  • To foster collaboration between academics, educators, and industry and government personnel on research and development problems and issues of mutual concern and interest
