New Library Appointments
There have been a number of changes in
the Libraries this year. After serving as Associate
University Librarian for 15 years, Toni Olshen has moved
to the new Peter F. Bronfman Business Library. Toni's
background is in business librarianship: she has been
the editor of the Canadian Business Index, assistant
manager of the Financial Post Library, and Manager of
Client Services for FPOnline.
Brent Roe is the incoming AUL, and several
new appointments have also been made in other York Libraries
- see below!
Brent Roe, New Associate University
Librarian, Information Services

Brent
Roe has assumed the position of Associate University
Librarian, Information Services effective September
2003. This is one of two positions that assist the
University Librarian in the administration of York
University Libraries. Brent moves from the Scott
Library Reference Department, where he has been
a member of the Reference Department Coordinating
Group and contributed to reference and information
literacy activities, as well as being the subject
librarian for history and classical studies. |
During his five year appointment, Brent
will provide leadership in the development, coordination,
and promotion of library-wide information services.
He will contribute to policy development and implementation,
resource allocation, strategic planning, personnel management,
and the development of cooperative relationships with
other organizations.
Interim and new reporting structures
The AUL, Information Services will also
play a major role in the implementation of a new reporting
structure which will bring together branch libraries
and most public service departments under the position.
For the next several months the following
departments will report to the AUL, Information Services:
Leslie Frost Library (Glendon College), Peter F. Bronfman
Business Library, Scott Library Circulation Services,
Resource Sharing, Map Library, and Scott Library Reference
Department.
Ultimately, under the new reporting structure,
the following departments will report to the AUL, Information
Services: Leslie Frost Library, Peter F. Bronfman Business
Library, Scott Library Circulation Services, Map Library,
Scott Library Reference Department, Steacie Science
Library, and Sound & Moving Image Library.
Sophie Bury, Bronfman Business Library
Sophie Bury has been appointed as a Business
Librarian in the Peter F. Bronfman Business Library,
effective May 2003. She earned an Honours B.A. in Economics
and German at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, and
an MLIS degree at University College, Dublin, Ireland.

Sophie
comes to us from Wilfrid Laurier University Library,
where she was the Business/Economics Librarian and
Special Projects Librarian from 1999. Previously,
she was Project Archivist, Doris Lewis Rare Book
Room, Dana Porter Library, University of Waterloo,
and Information Manager/Webmaster, HEAnet, the Internet
service provider for Irish universities and colleges.

Jennifer Dekker, Frost Library,
Glendon College
Jennifer Dekker, a graduate of the University
of Toronto's M.I.St. program, began a contractually
limited appointment as a Librarian at Frost Library,
Glendon College, effective August 2003. Jennifer will
also contribute directly to library activities on the
Keele Campus, working on projects in the Scott Library
Reference Department, Bibliographic Services, and Archives
and Special Collections.

Jennifer's
background includes a Bachelor of Arts from Carleton
University, experience providing reference services
at Toronto and Oshawa Public Libraries, cataloguing
electronic serials, working on digital library projects,
and most recently, working with SMARTRISK, the Injury
Prevention affiliate of the Canadian Health Network. |
Ilo-Katryn Maimets, Steacie Science
Library

Ilo-Katryn Maimets has been appointed as a Science
Librarian in the Steacie Science Library effective
July 2003. Ilo graduated from the University of
Toronto in 2002 with a M.I.St. She also holds
B.Sc., M.Sc., and B.Ed. degrees, all from York
University.
Previously, Ilo worked as a Reference Assistant
at the Steacie Science Library and has a long
employment history on the campus, including experience
working as a Laboratory Technician in undergraduate
Biology labs. She also worked at the Hospital
for Sick Children as a Cytogenetics Technologist.

Changes in Librarian Subject Specializations
There have also been some changes in librarian
subject specializations. Each of the librarians has
their own areas of subject specialization, and they
select materials for the Libraries and maintain contact
with faculty members in these areas.
