Information Literacy Initiative for
Psychology Students
Last spring the Psychology (Arts and Science)
Department approved a motion ensuring that all psychology
majors have an opportunity to attend a library research
workshop. Starting this year, all Arts and Science sections
of the Introduction to Research Methods (PSYC 2030)
class will include a 1½ hour lecture hall presentation
on literature searching and other aspects of information
literacy. Effective literature searching is an integral
part of the research process, and so library research
instruction fits nicely into the curriculum of this
course on research methods.
This second year class was strategically
chosen for this initiative because it is a prerequisite
for all psychology majors. This will mean that librarians
will be able to offer all psychology undergraduates-a
significant proportion of the York student body-some
instruction in library research skills. During the 2004/05
academic year, Psychology (Arts and Science) will be
offering eight sections of PSYC 2030, each with up to
125 students.
