Equipment now built in to most classrooms
Now almost all small seminar rooms and
classrooms at York have a built in TV, VHS, DVD, and
overhead projector. The benefits? Since the equipment
is permanently installed, there's no need to place an
order in advance of your class and no log on code required
to use the built in equipment.
Most of the lecture halls now have built
in projectors and podiums with a computer, LCD screen
and in some cases, a document camera. While you will
need initial training to use the podium, once you have
completed the training and obtained an access login,
you will not need to place an ITC order for courses
held in the rooms with this equipment.
To find out about equipment available
in the various classrooms across campus, see the ITC
website: http://www.cns.yorku.ca/itc/rooms.html.
Streaming Audio
Streaming audio (an audio recording which
is made available over the internet) can be helpful
to students in reviewing and understanding complicated
material, or useful in catching up on a missed lecture.
If you wish your lectures to be recorded
for later listening by students, ITC can do so in the
Control Room of a number of buildings (see chart below).
No additional equipment is needed in the lecture hall;
when you use the neck microphone the audio is sent to
the control room and to the recorders.
Once recorded, lectures can be encoded
as Real Media audio files, placed on the CNS Streaming
Server and made available to your students within twelve
hours. ITC provides each instructor with the files required
to link to and launch the audio lectures on your course
website.
At your request, ITC can also copy and
save your lectures for you on a CD at the end of each
term.
Streaming with MediaSite Live
In some lecture halls (see chart below)
using MediaSite Live technology the audio portion of
a lecture can be captured and streamed along with the
video of the instructor and any computer or document
camera output used in the lecture. No extra equipment
is required in the lecture hall. The audio and video
are captured from the instructor's neck microphone and
the built in camera, and the computer and document camera
output is captured at the same time.
The lecture can be webcast live and stored
for on-demand use, and can be made available on your
course website right after the class.
MediaSite Live technology is also available
in the Multimedia Production Studio in Stedman. Use
it to record material for later use, such as a guest
speaker's presentation, or for recording lectures ahead
of time with graphics, for presentation in the classroom
when the instructor is unable to attend.
See a list of
rooms that support Streaming Audio and MediaSite
Live.
