Less spam in your York email

New spam filter for email accounts

CNS has implemented a new spam filter. This filter will apply to all staff and faculty email accounts with "userid@yorku.ca" addresses. It will not affect mail delivered to individuals using other departmental or Faculty email systems such as Lotus Notes in Glendon, Osgoode, Atkinson and Schulich, MS Exchange in Facilities Services and CSBO, and First Class in Education.

When the filter has been activated on your account, you will receive the following email message:

CNS has instituted a new spam filter that will move any message tagged by the system as spam to a folder called Yspam-found. The filter has now been activated on your email account. This folder should be visible from your email client, if not please contact your local technical support group. You may also contact the helpdesk at (416)736-2100 x55800 or helpdesk@yorku.ca for assistance.

You should scan this folder regularly to ensure that no email message was wrongly tagged as spam. The system will delete messages in this folder that are older than 21 days.

Coming Soon: Personalize the Spam Filter

You will also have the option of further personalizing the spam filter to recognize items that have been defined as spam but that you consider to be legitimate email. Within the next few weeks a Yspam-notspam folder will be created for users. The Yspam-notspam folder will be displayed in your folder list. You save email to this folder that was delivered to your Yspam-found folder and that you consider to be legitimate. You should also save a copy in another folder to protect against losing the message.

Once it is in place, the Yspam-notspam folder will be checked nightly. The main filter will be updated accordingly, and then the messages will be deleted from the folder.

Please note also that SPAM ASSASSIN has been discontinued.

Questions or concerns about the spam filter should be directed to the CNS Helpdesk in the Computing Commons, William Small Centre at 416-736-5800 or helpdesk@yorku.ca.
