New Faces at the York University Libraries

Bibliographic Services welcomes three new librarians

Stacy Allison-Cassin

Stacy Allison-Cassin has been appointed to a continuing position as Bibliographic Services Librarian, Scott Library. Stacy is interested in issues surrounding access to information and is active in the Canadian Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres. She holds a MISt from the University of Toronto, Masters in Music Performance from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh and a B.Mus, Performance from Wilfrid Laurier University.

Prior to her arrival at York, Stacy was National Librarian, Canadian Music Centre in Toronto, where her responsibilities included cataloguing materials for the National Library and regional libraries, development and maintenance of the online library catalogue and digital projects, reference services and management responsibilities.

Stacy’s previous library experience includes positions at the University of Toronto as Graduate Assistant Library Technician, Cataloguing, Robarts Library, and reference service, Mississauga campus; and Music Ensemble Library, Special Project and Major Ensembles Librarian, Duquesne University, Pittsburgh.

Seth Lee

Seth Lee has been appointed as Digital Services Librarian for a three year term. Based in the Bibliographic Services Department, Seth has a strong interest in e-Learning and digital initiatives and is currently investigating Open Journal Software and its application to electronic journal publication. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Education Technology, Hangyang University, Seoul, Korea and is a recent graduate of McGill University’s MLIS program.

Seth served his practicum at Web, Library and Archives, International Civil Aviation Organization in Montreal creating metadata, cataloguing digital materials, maintaining library systems/web applications and participating in the development of digital collection web applications.

 He also served a summer internship at Sectoral Information Technology Resources Center, Information Solution Group, The World Bank in Washington DC. Previous to his graduate studies, Seth was an IT Specialist for five years with IBM Global Services, Korea.

Marcia Salmon

Marcia Salmon has been appointed to a continuing appointment as Bibliographic Services Librarian - Electronic Resources and Serials.   Marcia is delighted to return to York and is looking forward to continuing to pursue her particular interests in teaching, as well as metadata and XML-related initiatives such as York University's institutional repository. She holds a MLIS from the University of Western Ontario and a BSc (Honours) from the University of Toronto.

Marcia's previous experience includes a position at McMaster University as Cataloguing Policy Librarian, where she was responsible for overseeing authorities workflows, supervising staff, chairing the Cataloging Standards Committee and creating a manual for cataloguing GIS data.

Before working at McMaster, Marcia held a contractually limited appointment in Bibliographic Services at York University Libraries. She also worked in a contractually limited appointment at the Ontario Regional Research Library at Environment Canada. Marcia is delighted to return to York and is looking forward to continuing to explore her particular interests in metadata and XML-related initiatives as well as various teaching pursuits.

Steacie Science Librarian appointed

Nathalie Zhou

Nathalie Zhou has accepted the position of Science Librarian on a 28-month contractually limited term in the Steacie Science and Engineering Library. Nathalie holds a MLIS from the University of British Columbia and a BSc in Information Science from Wuhan University, P.R. China. Nathalie is serving as Liaison Librarian for Physics, Astronomy, Chemistry, and Earth and Space Science in 2005-2006; in 2006-2007, she will be serving as Liaison Librarian for Physics, Astronomy, Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science, Engineering and ITEC.

Before her appointment at York, Nathalie was Assistant Librarian, Science and Engineering Team at the University of Arizona Library, Tucson. Her previous experience includes service as an on-call librarian for the Vancouver Public Library,  Richmond Public Library and Coquitlam Public Library, where she provided reference services, supervised staff, evaluated and suggested websites to be listed as links on the library's website, and displayed selected materials. Her earlier librarian experience includes a position at Hubei Science and Technology Information Institute, P.R. China, a nationally recognized information retrieval centre.

Adjunct Archivist appointed

Carolyn Casenas

The Clara Thomas Archives and Special Collections welcomes Carolyn Casenas as Adjunct Archivist for a 12 month contractually limited appointment. Carolyn holds a joint MAS/MLIS from the University of British Columbia and a BA, Linguistics from Simon Fraser University.

Previous to her appointment at York, Carolyn held a position as Project Archivist, UBC Rare Books and Special Collections responsible for processing materials pertaining to two themes in the Chung Collections: the Asian experience in North American and the history of the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Carolyn’s other Archives experience comprises a variety of positions including Contract Archivist, Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, Richmond, BC;  Curator, Henri J. M. Nouwen Archives and Research Collection, John M. Kelly Library, Toronto; Assistant Archivist, Delta Museum & Archives, Delta, B.C., Contract Archivist/Librarian, Law Society of British Columbia.

Visiting Librarian at YUL

Tanis Fink

Tanis Fink holds a Visiting Librarian position in the Libraries from September 2005 until March 2006. 

Tanis is the Chief Librarian and Director of the Learning Commons for Seneca College. She has led many strategic initiatives for the Seneca Library & Learning Commons in the areas of web-based resources and services; information literacy; the designing, building and operating of the library Learning Commons; and digital information services.

In addition to her work at Seneca College, Tanis has been active with the HLLR Group (Heads, Libraries and Learning Resources, an operating group of the Association of Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology of Ontario ), the Bibliocentre Users Advisory Group, and the Ontario Library Association.

Tanis will be working with the Libraries on a number of projects around which we are anticipating a fruitful exchange of ideas and expertise.

Changes in Libraries’ Executive Officer position

Susan Callum, the Libraries’ Executive Officer for the past 11 years, is retiring from her position at the end of November. She will be missed, and she takes with her our fond remembrances and best wishes for the future.

Tina Perera

Tina Perera has accepted the position of Libraries’ Executive Officer effective September 28, 2005. Tina comes to the Libraries from the University of Toronto, where she held the position of Business Manager, Department of Capital Projects, Division of Business Affairs.

Previous to her work at U of T she was Senior Administrator at the Ontario Cancer Genetics Network with the Ministry of Health. She holds a Masters of Business Administration from Royal Roads University, and a BA from the University of Toronto as well as a number of human resources certificates. We welcome Tina to York.
