Improving Service to Our Users

New! Self Check Machines in the Librariesself check machines

Wait in line no longer!  If all you need to do is check out a few books from our stacks, try out our new self-check machines.  The machines have been installed in three of the York Libraries: 3 machines on the ground floor of Scott Library, 1 in Steacie Science & Engineering Library, and 1 in the Peter F. Bronfman Business Library.  The machines are easy to use but if you have any questions, feel free to ask at the desk, and we’ll be happy to assist you.

The Library Student Advisory Group

15 students from a wide variety of faculties and affiliations have joined together to form our first ever Library Student Advisory Group. The purpose of this group is to provide an ongoing forum for dialogue between students and the Libraries with the goal of improving the Libraries’ services, learning spaces, and collections.

The Library Student Advisory Group is where:

  • The Libraries seek feedback from undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Students can bring ideas and issues to the attention of the Libraries.
  • Students can help facilitate communication communication between the Libraries and the student body at large, and joint projects can be identified and initiated.
  • Students can participate in assessment exercises and assist in the interpretation of results to improve library service quality.

The Advisory Group will be meeting four times a year to discuss emerging issues. Student involvement is crucial in keeping our Libraries responsive and our services of high quality.

students studyingLibrary Service Quality Assessment: LibQual+ 2010

LibQual+™ is another way we are hoping to keep our Libraries responsive to our community’s needs.  LibQual+™ is a rigorously tested Web-based survey tool used by research libraries in Canada, the U.S., the U.K. and Europe to assess library service quality and to track trends over time.

This winter, York’s Libraries will again be participating in LibQual+™.  The survey is now administered every three years in Canada and this will be our fifth LibQual survey (our first was in 2000).  Watch for the survey this coming February!  We will again be surveying students, staff and faculty and look forward to your participation.
