Keeping Us Safe Against Online Intruders
In January 2005, Computing and Network Services implemented a network intrusion prevention system, designed to prevent malicious network activity and attacks on the York network from the Internet.
But CNS is helping to protect more than the network. CNS Information Security (http://infosec.yorku.ca/) has made it easy for you to help protect your own PC’s Windows operating system against malicious attacks from viruses, trojans, worms or other agents that attack Windows-based computers, starting up when you open email attachments or attacking your operating system directly. CNS also provides free antivirus software to all York faculty, staff and students.
Keep your personal computer protected
How easy is it to help protect your PC? As easy as 1-2-3. CNS Information Security has developed a Microsoft Windows Security Essentials 1-2-3 Checklist, and following the basic steps will help to keep your PC protected, whether on campus or at home, against viruses and other vulnerabilities.
The checklist covers three key items:
- Choosing appropriate passwords
- Windows Security updates and configuring the Automatic Security Updates feature
- Symantec Anti-Virus protection and configuring the Live Update feature
And remember: always exercise care when opening email attachments or downloading files from unknown or suspicious sources on the internet.
