AirYork Wireless Network Expansion

laptop Wireless network use at York has continued to grow, particularly among the student population. In fact, usage has more than doubled since last year, routinely reaching over 550 simultaneous users. In response to this demand, during the current academic year CNS expanded the AirYork wireless service all over campus, with new services being installed in the following locations:
  • Petrie Science building
  • Glendon Hall, Glendon campus
  • West Office building
  • Pond Road residence main floor,
  • Kinsmen building classrooms
  • Health, Nursing and Environmental Studies building
  • Curtis Lecture Hall second floor open area
In addition, service was expanded in a number of existing wireless locations in the TEL Building, Osgoode Hall Law School, York Lanes, the Student Centre and the Steacie Science and Engineering Library. Wireless service was increased in these buildings by extending access to additional locations where students study, increasing the existing concentration of coverage and introducing more access points in meeting spaces used by staff and faculty. Planned expansion of wireless coverage for 2005-2006

In the coming year CNS will continue to increase the coverage of the wireless network, concentrating primarily on student spaces and selected meeting areas. The total number of wireless access points is projected to more than double, to approximately 350. Current plans are to increase the concentration of coverage in high use areas such as the York University Libraries and Osgoode, and to expand in new areas such as Fine Arts, Ross Building, portions of the college Complexes 1 and 2. Please contact Paul Busby, Director of Network Services in CNS (paul@yorku.ca) if you believe that there is a location where demand for wireless access exists and which should be considered as a possible point for expansion in the coming year.
