The Best Tools for Searching the Internet

While Google maintains its place as the most popular tool for searching the Web, there are many other search tools that can enhance Internet research.

York University Libraries has updated the Search the Internet page to explain the different types of search tools available, describe what tools work best for certain types of searching, and to provide guidance on how to access information that is hidden from most search engines such as Google. The page also highlights the difference between the free Web and the subscription-based portions of the Web to which the Libraries can provide access.

Students appreciate the immediacy of doing research on the free Web and there is little reason to suspect that they won’t continue to use it as a primary research tool. The updated Search the Internet page will provide them with guidance on how to critically approach both searching and assessing Web resources. And for those eager to master searching prowess, links are provided to tutorials that walk through the advanced features that many search tools make available. And as always, the importance of library resources for scholarly research has been emphasized.

To access this updated guide, select Search the Internet under eRESOURCES on the Libraries' homepage.
