Access to the Scott Library Graduate Student Reading Room

Graduate students can gain access to the new Graduate Student Reading Room on the fourth floor of Scott Library by obtaining the door access code from the Libraries’ website. From the Libraries’ homepage (www.library.yorku.ca), click on Graduate Students, then on the Access Code icon. If you’re a graduate student (or faculty member), get the code by using your library PIN number together with your library card, student or employee number.

Guest Access to Library Computers

Visitors to the Libraries who are not current York faculty, students or staff members can now obtain a one-day guest account that will allow them access to Library resources and the Internet through most library computers. Accounts can be requested (with photo ID) from the Exit Control Desk in Scott Library and from Circulation or Reference Desks in the Bronfman Business Library, Frost Library and Steacie Science and Engineering Library. Computers allowing catalogue access only (and in some cases York-only Internet access) without the need for a login are also available. For more information see http://www.library.yorku.ca/ccm/FacilitiesAndEquipment/GuestAccounts.

More Laptops Available for Use

The Libraries have increased the number of laptops available for loan to faculty and students for in-library use. There are now about a dozen machines that may be borrowed for in-library use for up to three hours at a time at the Scott, Steacie, Bronfman, and (soon) Frost Libraries. Just present your library card at the circulation desk (where you sign out books). To check availability, type in "laptop" as a title in the catalogue.

Library Cards for Research Assistants

Did you know…that arrangements may be made for Research Assistants to borrow library materials on behalf of a faculty member for the regular faculty loan period?

Applications for a Research Assistant Library Card are available at Scott and Frost Libraries. Completed forms should be submitted to the Scott or Frost circulation desks. Alternatively, a letter of permission signed by a faculty member will be accepted, provided that it specifies the duration of appointment of the Research Assistant and that the faculty member takes responsibility for all changed incurred on the Research Assistant’s card.

Check Out Your Own Library Materials

Have you used the self check unit to check out your library materials from Scott Library? If not, do give it a try. It’s one way of avoiding long lineups at the Scott Circulation Desk, and it’s easy to use. The self check unit is located at the right side of the Scott Circulation Desk, against the wall near the Express Circulation station.

Please note that you cannot use the Self Check unit with an alphabetical library PIN (you may have an alphabetical PIN if you’ve been at York a very long time). You can, however, change your PIN to the required four-digit numeric PIN by simply clicking on My Account under SERVICES on the Library homepage, then on Change My PIN. As well, for various technical reasons, self-check will not be an option with every book: you may sometimes still have to have an item checked out by the staff at the circulation desk.
