The Archives welcomes a wide variety of users including:

  • university administrators seeking information from records deposited in the University Archives;
  • faculty and students pursuing specific research projects;
  • alumni and the general public
  • for visitors to campus

Through the provision of services to these constituencies Archives and Special Collections (ASC) attempts to support the teaching, research, and outreach functions of York University.

In-person appointment-based visits to our reading room are suspended until 31 January 2022. This policy will be re-evaluated in the New Year based on the evolving public health situation and we will update this page when we have further information. Depending upon the nature of the request, staff may be able to provide online assistance during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.). Photocopying

Copies are made for private study / research purposes only and not for reproduction or publication in print, or online, without the consent of the copyright owner.

Copying is also dependent on the fragility and format of the material.

Copies cannot be transferred to other individuals or institutions without the written consent of York University Archives and Special Collections.

Copies are currently $0.30/page for letter and legal sized documents and $0.60/page for ledger sized documents (11 x 17").

Same day service for copying is not be possible, please inquire about the current turnaround time when placing your copy order.

Postage can be arranged for copies to be mailed out (for a fee).

 Using your own camera

Photographs of archival material can be taken by patrons at no charge, once they have secured permission from an archivist.

 Digital reproductions

Scans can be made for private study / research purposes only and not for reproduction or publication in print, or online, without the consent of the copyright owner.

Scanning is also dependent on the fragility and format of the material.

Same day service for scanning is not be possible, please inquire about the current turnaround time when placing your order.

 Audio and visual reproductions

If patrons plan on consulting audiovisual materials in the archives, please provide archives staff with prior notice (5-16 weeks ideal), so that stable access copies can be digitized for use in the reading room.

Reproductions of audio and visual recordings held in the archives can be made for private study / research purposes only and not for reproduction or publication without the consent of the copyright owner.

Same day service for audio-visual materials is not possible, please inquire about the current turnaround time when placing your reproduction order.

Rates for reproduction are dependent on format of recording.

 Lending

Archival materials can be consulted only in the ASC Reading Room. Some published items from Special Collections may be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan if the recipient institution is an Academic Library in Ontario and can provide secure, supervised reading services.

 Research Funding

The Annual Competition for the Kent Haworth Archival Research Fellowship closes 14 January 2015.

For visitors to campus

York University Libraries offer several means of access to the Libraries' public access computers by guests through Library Guest Accounts.

Temporary accommodation arrangements can be made by contacting CSBO Accommodation & Conference Services directly or, the Executive Learning Centre at the Schulich School of Business.
The Campus Services and Business Operations website has links to information regarding food services on campus; transit, driving directions, and parking information are all readily available.
