LibX
LibX is very useful. It's a plugin for Firefox or IE that gives quick and easy access to the library's catalogue and online journals. We've specially customized a version for use by York people.Download it here: LibX for York University Libraries
You can toggle the toolbar on and off if you don't want it to appear at all times. To toggle it click on the YorkU logo at the bottom of your browser.
How does it work?
Using the Toolbar Search
The LibX toolbar allows you to search the library catalogue right from the toolbar. You can search by Author, Title, Keyword, Subject, ISBN, ISSN, or Call Number. You can add fields by clicking on the down arrow, and delete fields by clicking on the red X
Enter the terms you wish to search and the click on the "Search the York University Libraries" text. Your results will appear in a new browser window.
Drag-and-drop Searching
You can also search by highlight the term(s) you want to search and then dropping it on the "Search York University Libraries" text.
Using ISBN and ISSN Hyperlinks
LibX activates ISBN and ISSNs on webpages as hyperlinks. Clicking on these links does a search for these items in the catalogue.
Searching by using the mouse right click
You can also search the catalogue by highlight a term on a webpage and righ-clicking the mouse. You will get a menu where you can choose the kind of search you would like to do.
In-Context Searching
LibX also adds a YorkU button to a number of popular webpages like Amazon and AbeBooks. It does depend on the recognition of an ISBN so a link will not always show up. Click on the link to search the library catalogue for the item.
Here is an example from AbeBooks
OpenURL Referrer
You'll also want to install OpenURL Referrer. It's another really handy Firefox and IE extension that will make little Find It @ York buttons pop up whenever someone mentions a journal article. Set your options so they look like this:
The Link Server Base URL is http://sfx.scholarsportal.info/york/ .The full image location you should specify
is http://theta.library.yorku.ca/sfxyork.gif . That will make the
button show up.
