Image Search Engines

Although there are many image search engines available on the internet, there are only a few sources of images that supply these engines. Below are listed the main sources.

Photo Sharing

Flickr - A web site for managing, sharing, organizing and searching for photographs. Photographs are contributed by members (sign up is free).

Flickr Applications - Flickr is open source software and many free applications have been developed with additional functions.

Subject Specific Image Sites

Here are a few web sites with excellent links to subject specific image web sites.

Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR)

CBIR involves searching for image content (colours, form, medium, image depicted, historical period, etc.). This kind of searching is still experimental.

Retrievr - will search Flickr photos based on visual information

Colr - will search Flickr photos by colours selected from a colour wheel
