Indexes and Databases

Use these tools to find citations, abstracts and/or full text materials on your topic. Both scholarly and popular articles are included.

Compendex (via Engineering Village)

A bibliographic database of engineering research containing over nine million references and abstracts taken from over 5,000 engineering journals, conferences and technical reports. Coverage includes nuclear technology, bioengineering, transportation, chemical and process engineering, light and optical technology, agricultural engineering and food technology, computers and data processing, applied physics, electronics and communications, control, civil, mechanical, materials, petroleum, aerospace and automotive engineering as well as narrower subtopics within all these and other major engineering fields. Online coverage is from 1969 to the present.

IEEE Xplore

Complete full text of all IEEE/IEE journals, conferences and standards since 1988. Important for all fields of computing and electrical engineering as well as aerospace, biomedical, physics and geoscience.

Books24x7 Engineering Pro 

An ebook collection of thousands of books covering all areas of engineering and technology, including computer hardware and software, electrical, environmental, aerospace, civil and chemical. Computer science is also covered.

Inspec (Engineering Village)

Indexes the literature of physics, electronics, electrical engineering and computer science comprehensively. Covers 3500 journals and 1500 conferences as well as books, reports and dissertations.

Scholars Portal Search (New Version & Functionality)

A single search screen that provides access to multiple databases for searching literature in a number of disciplines. Choose a subject area or select Specific Databases to conduct a search.

Expanded Academic

Indexes science, engineering and technology as well as the arts, humanities and social sciences. It includes many full-text articles and abstracts for a mix of scholarly journals, popular magazines and newspapers published in English. Coverage is from 1980 - present. Far from comprehensive, but a good place to start to get a few full-text articles.

Applied Science and Technology Index

Indexes primarily English language technology articles. Coverage includes trade and industry publications, journals published by professional and technical societies as well as buyer's guides, directories and conference proceedings. Appropriate for engineering (including environmental) and chemistry undergraduates looking for analytical methods and their applications. Coverage from 1983 to the present.

ABI/Inform Global

This resource incorporates technology, management, industry and company information of both a practical and theoretical nature. A valuable business perspective on technology and engineering design and management with many relevant case studies. A database containing citations and abstracts for over 1000 business and management publications. More than 600 of these titles are available in full-text or full-image

Business Source Premier

Contains full text for 7,792 periodicals and other sources, including scholarly journals, trade and general business magazines, monographs, country economic and industry reports, industry yearbooks, and market research reports. Provides extensive coverage of many sources including materials of relevance to a wide range of technology topics.

TechXtra

TechXtra is a free service which can help you find articles, books, the best websites, the latest industry news, job announcements, technical reports, technical data, full text eprints, the latest research, teaching and learning resources and more, in engineering, mathematics and computing.

Design and Applied Arts Index

An international index to 450+ design and craft journals. Subject covered include architecture, all aspects of design (including industrial), ceramics, glass, jewellery, fashion, illustration, photography, advertising, marketing and craft education, history, and management. Includes reviews of books, videos and CD-ROMs. Coverage is 1973 - 2001.

Web of Science

Indexes 8,500 research journals across the Social Sciences, Sciences and Arts & Humanities. Has good coverage of interdiciplinary scientific topics. Allows you to search for articles by subject, author, journal, and author address as well as for articles that cite a known author or work (citation searching). Coverage is from 1945 - present.

Geography

Indexes the international literature in physical and human geography, providing access to information from journals, monographs, books, conference proceedings, reports and theses. Includes environmental studies. Coverage is from 1990 - present.

GeoRef

Indexes the geological literature of North America from 1785 to the present and the rest of the world from 1933. Includes references to all publications of the U.S. Geological Survey. Masters' theses and doctoral dissertations both U.S. and Canadian as well as journals, maps and reports are covered. Useful for undergraduate and graduate level earth science and geography students.

Encyclopedias and Dictionaries

Encyclopedias are useful to get basic background information on a topic and are good places to start the research process. Dictionaries give brief definitions of unfamiliar words, terms and acronyms.

Oxford Reference Online

Oxford Reference Online brings together language and subject reference works from one of the world's biggest reference publishers into a single cross-searchable resource. The Core Collection contains over 100 dictionary, language reference, and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press. It covers all scientific and technology fields.

Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry

An online reference in applied chemistry, industrial chemistry and chemical engineering with 800 articles written by experts from the top chemical companies and research institutes. Ullmann's can be used for any query concerning chemicals and chemical processes. Useful for chemistry students at all levels.

Encyclopedia of Astronomy and Astrophysics

A comprehensive reference in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics. It has nearly 5000 up-to-date articles over 30 subject areas including active galaxies, clusters, cosmology, public impact instrumentation. It is particularly useful as a reference for history and biography.

Virtual Technical Reports Center

Contains links to technical reports, preprints, reprints, dissertations, theses, and research reports of all kinds. Some metasites are listed by subject categories, as well as by institution.

NASA Technical Report Server

Provides access to NASA generated and sponsored scientific and technical literature. NTRS includes reports and articles from non-NASA aerospace sources as well: the Physics eprint server (arXiv), BioMed Central, the Energy Citation Database (from the U.S. Department ofEnergy), and Aeronautical Research Committee reports from the MAGiC project.

NASA Scientific and Technical Information Program

STI is the collected set of facts, analyses, and conclusions resulting from scientific, technical, and related engineering research and development efforts, both basic and applied.

Synthesis Engineering Ebooks

Synthesis is an information service for the research, development, and educational community in engineering and computer science. The basic component of the library is a 50- to 100-page "Lecture"; a self-contained electronic book that synthesizes an important research or development topic, authored by an expert contributor to the field.

Patents

Canadian Patents Database

This database consists of patent descriptions and images for patents since 1920. The electronically available patent information consists of patent document images, bibliographic data and patent document text.

United States Patent and Trademark Office

The database includes information about all US patents (including utility, design, reissue, plant patents and SIR documents) from the first patent issued in 1790 to the most recent issue week. Patents from January 1976 to the present offer the full searchable text. Patents from 1790 to December 1975 offer only the patent number and the current US patent classification in the text display.

European Patent Office

This database includes patent applications in their original language from The European Patent Office and The World Intellectual Property Org and patent applications with an English abstract and title from the rest of the world including Japan

Patent Information on the Internet

An international list of patent related websites maintained by the European Patent Office including patent offices, databases and legal representatives.

Newspapers

Canadian Newsstand - Major Dailies

A searchable full-text database of major Canadian daily newspapers, including the Edmonton Journal, Halifax Daily News, Montreal Gazette, National Post, Ottawa Citizen, Toronto Star, and Vancouver Sun. Coverage of most titles goes back to the early 1990s.

Canadian Periodical Index

Includes Canadian and international academic journals, magazines, and newspapers in both English and French. All subjects are represented, with an emphasis on Canadiana. Many articles are full text. Coverage is from 1988 - present.

Factiva

Factiva includes nearly 9,000 sources from 118 countries in 22 languages, including more than 120 continuously updated newswires. More than 900 sources are available on or before the date of publication. For newspapers, the service provides same-day and archival coverage of The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Washington Post, The Globe and Mail, Financial Times, Les Echos, South China Morning Post, Australian Financial Review, Sydney Morning Herald, Straits Times, Yomiuri Shimbun, and local newspapers from every corner of the globe. General business and industry publications like The Economist, Forbes, Fortune, Time, Newsweek, Finanz & Wirtschaft, Satellite News, BusinessWeek, and more are also covered. Note the option to limit search to articles by industry including the healthcare industry as a whole and subindustries within it.
