Statistics Research Guide

Here you will find a guide to resources in statistics as a discipline (e.g., mathematical statistics, applied statistics). If you are looking for statistics or data on a particular topic (i.e., income distribution of families in Toronto, or data on the incidence of cancer throughout the world), go to the "Statistical sources" link on the library homepage. You can also look under the "Data and Statistics" subheading in other pathfinders.

Indexes and Databases

Use these tools to find citations, abstracts and/or full text materials on your topic. Both scholarly and popular articles are included.

Current Index to Statistics

Indexes publications in statistics and related fields. References are drawn from 111 core journals that are fully indexed, non-core journals from which articles are selected that have statistical content, proceedings and edited books, and other sources. Suitable for senior undergraduate and graduate levels. Coverage is from 1975.

Mathscinet

Online version of Mathematical Reviews. Indexes and reviews the mathematical literature since 1940. Over 80,000 new items are added each year, most of them classified according to the Mathematics Subject Classification.

Scholars Portal Search (New Version & Functionality)

A single search screen that provides access to multiple databases for searching literature in a number of disciplines. Choose a subject area or select Specific Databases to conduct a search.

Project Euclid

Project Euclid's mission is to advance scholarly communication in the field of theoretical and applied mathematics and statistics. Project Euclid is designed to address the unique needs of low-cost independent and society journals.

Locus: SIAM's Online Journal Archive

This is the interface to the SIAM Journals Online service. From here you may select individual journals published by SIAM or you may search all of the SIAM journals.

Web of Science

Indexes 8,500 research journals across the Sciences, Social Sciences, and Arts & Humanities. Has good coverage of interdiciplinary science and technology topics, particularly in fields such as ecology and engineering. Allows you to search for articles by subject, author, journal, and author address as well as for articles that cite a known author or work (citation searching). Coverage is from 1900 - present.

Scopus

Scopus is a comprehensive international database for scientific, medical, and technical information. It contains approximately 15,000 journal titles from 4,000 publishers, and abstracts going back to 1960. Scopus covers all major peer reviewed STM titles and is integrated with Scirus web search to cover the scientific web. It provides searching capability, linking to full-text sources, cited references, saved search and alerting features including RSS alerts. More information on Scopus

Compendex (through Engineering Village)

The Combined Compendex® & Inspec® database allows for searching on a broad range of topics within the scientific, applied science, technical and engineering disciplines. Coverage includes nuclear technology, bioengineering, transportation, chemical and process engineering, light and optical technology, agricultural engineering and food technology, computers and data processing, applied physics, electronics and communications, control, civil, mechanical, materials, petroleum, aerospace and automotive engineering. Coverage is from 1969 to present.

Social Sciences Abstracts

Indexes journals from a wide variety of social science disciplines and interdisciplinary fields. These fields include environmental studies, urban and regional planning and international relations, among others. Emphasis is on the United States with some international coverage. Coverage is from 1994 - present.

JSTOR

JSTOR is a full text periodical index to back issues of journals in the humanities,social sciences and sciences, including coverage of some of the important Mathematics & Statistics journals. Indexing and full-text access generally runs back to the first issue but may not include issues published in the last 2-5 years.

Odesi

ODESI is an intuitive data portal for researchers, teachers and students. The project targets Statistics Canada datasets, datafiles from Gallup Canada and other polling companies, public-domain files such as the Canadian National Election Surveys and selected files from the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). Data related to agriculture, business and financial, communications and information, and health are also available from this portal.

Zentralblatt MATH

The libraries do not subscribe to this database. However it is possible to use the advanced search features to locate references of interest. Only three results are displayed in the unsubscribed/free version. You can also do a citation search

eBooks

York University Libraries subscribes to E-books from different content providers and publishers. These e-book providers offer varied functionalities and a list of all E-books available at YUL is available from this link.

Directory of Mathematics Preprint and e-Print Servers

The directory makes available to the mathematical community the current homepage URLs and email contacts of all mathematical preprint and e-print servers throughout the world.

History of Data Visualization

Data visualization is the science of visual representation of data and is defined as information which has been abstracted in some schematic form and includes attributes or variables for the units of information. This site is the work of Michael Friendly (York University) & Daniel J. Dennis and it portrays the history of the visualization of data and covers statistical graphics and thematic cartography.

Canadian National Committee for CODATA

The following report on data activities in Canada is prepared annually in conjunction with the General Assembly of CODATA. CODATA is the Committee on Data for Science and Technology of the International Council for Science (ICSU).

Encyclopedias and Dictionaries

Encyclopedias are useful to get basic background information on a topic and are good places to start the research process. Dictionaries give brief definitions of unfamiliar words, terms and acronyms.

MathWorld: Eric Weisstein's World of Mathematics

the web's most complete mathematical resource, assembled by internet Eric W. Weisstein with assistance from the mathematics and internet communities. MathWorld is a comprehensive and interactive mathematics encyclopedia intended for students, educators, math enthusiasts, and researchers.

Oxford Reference Online

Oxford Reference Online brings together language and subject reference works from one of the world's biggest reference publishers into a single cross-searchable resource. The Core Collection contains over 100 dictionary, language reference, and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press. It covers all scientific and technology fields.

Encyclopedia Britannica Online

A comprehensive and credible general knowledge encyclopedia.In addition to 72,000 articles on topics in every discipline, the Encyclopedia Britannica Online also provides links to 130,000 websites that have been selected and reviewed by Britannica's editorial board of experts.

Merlot Learning Material: Statistics

MERLOT is a leading edge, user-centered, searchable collection of peer reviewed and selected higher education, online learning materials, catalogued by registered members and a set of faculty development support services.

Society of Actuaries

Casualty Actuarial Society
