Indexes and Databases

Annee Philologique

The definitive research database for book chapters, scholarly articles, and conference presentations in classical studies. Citations are drawn from the print volumes of APH 1969-2001. Abstracts when available are usually in French.

L'Annee Philologique Help

A short guide describing how to search for author and subject searches. Also includes information on how to interpret and use results.

Abbreviations for Classics Journals

A good listing of common journal abbreviations in classical studies. Very helpful when using L'Annee Philologique (above).

Tables of Contents of Journals of Interest to Classicists

Hosted at the University of Toronto, this database indexes about 180 journals and contains some 45,000 citations.

Humanities Index

Indexes more than 500 journals in the humanities. Topics include archaeology, fine art, classics, communications, dance, film, gender studies, history, journalism, linguistics, literary criticism, music, the performing arts, philosophy, and religion. Coverage is from 1984 - present.

Web of Science

Indexes 8,500 research journals across the Humanities, Social Sciences and Sciences. Includes most major titles in English, history, classical studies, religious studies, women's studies, and other areas. Search for articles by subject, author, journal, and author address as well as for articles that cite a known author or work (citation searching). Humanities coverage is from 1975 - present.

Research Library

Designed primarily for undergraduate research, the Proquest Research Library provides access to nearly 400 periodicals in the humanities (as well as additional titles in the social sciences and sciences). A cross-section of journals from classical studies are included.

Expanded Academic ASAP

Provides access to the full-text of nearly 2,500 periodicals including more than 1,000 scholarly journals. Citations (or abstracts) are provided for an additional 1,500 titles. Coverage of a wide variety of topics in the humanities, sciences, social sciences make it an excellent database for the initial stages of research.

Encyclopedias and Dictionaries

Useful for background information on your topic. Unlike Wikipedia, entries in these encyclopedias are written and reviewed by scholars.

Brill's New Pauly (English) | Der Neue Pauly (German)

The definitive encyclopedia of ancient and classical civilization. Originally published in German, this encyclopedia is more highly regarded by scholars working in these fields and disciplines than any other.

Oxford Companion to Classical Civilization

An authoritative survey of the Greek and Roman worlds in all their aspects. Includes articles history and politics, ethics and morals, law and punishment, social and family life, language, literature, art, religion and mythology, technology, science, and medicine.

Concise Oxford Companion to Classical Literature

Provides accounts of the lives of many classical authors and plot summaries for major works. General entries trace the development of literary forms such as comedy and tragedy. There is also wide coverage of the historical, political, social, and artistic background.

Who's Who in the Classical World

Covers figures in Greek and Roman history and politics, literature, philosophy, science, and art.

De Imperatoribus Romanis

An online encyclopedia of Roman emperors from Augustus to Constantine XI Palaeologus.

Internet Encyclopedia of Greek Philosophy

Summary of Greek philosophy from the Presocratics to Neoplatonism. Includes biographical material as well as links to full-text primary sources.

Encyclopedia Mythica: Roman Myth

Includes more than 300 articles on Roman myth as well as links to equivalent Greek dieties.

Encyclopedia Mythica: Greek Myth

Includes more than 600 articles on Greek myth including genealogy tables, and links to equivalent Roman dieties.

Roman Numeral and Date Conversion

Online calculators for converting dates from the Julian or Gregorian calendars into Roman equivalents, and Roman numerals into Arabic numerals (or vice versa). There is also an online Roman numeral calculator.

Textkit: Greek and Latin Learning Tools

Fully downloadable Greek and Latin grammars, readers, lexicons, dictionaries, learning aids and classical e-books.

Thesaurus Linguae Graecae

The Thesaurus Linguae Graecae (TLG) provides access to most literary texts written in Greek from Homer to the fall of Byzantium in AD 1453. Currently there are some 3,500 authors and 11,000 full-text works in the database. Requires Greek fonts (downloadable on the site).

Perseus Project

A huge online archive to primary and secondary sources for the study of ancient Greece and Rome. Philology, literature, religion, art, architecture, and history are some of the areas covered.

Corpus Scriptorum Latinorum

A huge archive of ancient and medieval Latin literature on the web. Includes links to primary as well as secondary sources. Links to translations, when available, are also provided.

The Latin Library

Huge archive of full-text Latin primary sources from the ancient to the medieval world: Alcuin and Abelard to Varro and Vergil.

Christian Classics Ethereal Library

Massive archive of online Christian texts from the early church to the twentieth century.

Internet Ancient History Sourcebook

From human origins to late antiquity, provides full-text or links to full-text primary source materials.

Latin and Greek Grammars

Allen and Greenough's New Latin Grammar

The Latin grammar officially recommended by the Classical Studies Program at York University. Also available in the Scott Library at call number PA 2087 A525 1983.

Greek Grammar

Herbert Weir Smyth's Greek Grammar is officially recommended by the Classical Studies Program at York University. Also available in the Scott Reference collection (2nd floor of Scott) at call number PA 254 S6

Online Books and Journals

Oxford Scholarship Online: Classical Studies

An online archive of books published by Oxford University Press in classical studies. OUP publishes more books in classical studies than any other publisher.

JSTOR Classical Studies

Full-text from nearly twenty of the most prominent journals in classical studies. Titles include, among others, Classical Philology, Classical Quarterly, Journal of Hellenic Studies, and Journal of Roman Studies.

Biblical Archaeology Society

Full-text searchable archive of the Biblical Archaeology Review from 1975 to the present.

Bryn Mawr Classical Review

Contemporary reviews of scholarly works (1990 to the present) in classical studies including archaeology. Full text book reviews searchable by author, title, reviewer and keyword. Book reviews are also available in indexes such as Humanities Index and Web of Science.

Women in the Ancient World

Diotima

Materials for the interdisciplinary study of women and gender in the ancient world. Includes online book reviews, articles, images, &c. Provides links to related online resources.

Internet Women's History Sourcebook

Includes sections on human origins, ancient Egypt, ancient Mesopotamia, ancient Greece and Rome.

Web Guides

Internet Ancient History Sourcebook

From human origins to late antiquity, provides full-text or links to full-text primary source materials.

Late Antiquity in the Mediterranean

A guide to online resources 284-632 CE, the period between the Emperor Diocletian and the Prophet Muhammed.

Electronic Resources for Classicists: The Second Generation

A huge collection of links to resources of interest to classicists. Heading include e-texts, images, bibliographies, professional societies, academic departments, and course websites.

Ancient World Web

A good browsable list of resources organized by topic. Groupings include buildings & monuments, language & literature, mythology & religion, &c.

HyperHistory Online

Visual chart of world history from the earliest Sumerian civilizations (3200 BCE) through Minoan, Greek, and Roman empires. Includes maps.

Associations and Organizations

Ontario Classical Association

Established in 1944, the OCA is dedicated to the promotion of Classical Studies in the province of Ontario. Members include university professors, secondary school teachers, university and secondary school students, and other persons interested in the Classics.
