International MBA: Industry & Company Research

This guide is an introduction to sources used to research industries and companies from an international perspective. It may be used to identify companies related to career development. It highlights some of the key research tools available but it is not intended as a comprehensive list of sources. The focus is on resources covering companies, industries and countries world-wide. The sources listed below are available in print or electronically at the Peter F. Bronfman Business Library, S237 Seymour Schulich Building.

This guide is divided into the following sections:

Finding Company Information

Public companies are traded on stock exchanges or over-the-counter and are subject to regulation by Security Exchanges. They are required by law to file reports publicly. This makes it relatively easy to find information about public companies.

Private companies, other than federally regulated ones, are not required to report publicly and therefore it is much more difficult to find information about them. Generally speaking for private companies, there is only directory information and occasionally articles in newspapers or journals. it may be useful to explore company websites.

Bloomberg: A real-time financial service that provides quotes and technical analysis of corporate securities and government issues. Bloomberg also includes news articles and economic data. The coverage is international. Bloomberg is accessible via a dedicated Bloomberg terminal in the Bronfman Business Library. You can book online – select Bloomberg Workstation

Hoovers : A Dun and Bradstreet database with coverage of 40,000 companies worldwide including both public and private companies. Includes an overview, limited financial information, company for public companies, and directory information.

Investext Plus : A database providing global company and industry research and forecasts, reports from key brokerage firms and SDC merger and acquisition reports. Currently over 140,000 documents are available in the database dating from 1994 to present.

Mergent Online : Provides information for over 10,000 U.S. public companies and almost 20,000 non-U.S. public comapnies. Company records include detailed business descriptions, corporate histories and financial statements. Historical manuals are avaialble in the Retro Reference Collection: Bank & Finance (HG 4961 M65), Industrial (HG 4961 M67), International (HG 4501 M66 1998), Public Utility (HG 4961 M72 1999), Transportation (HG 4971 M74 1998), OTC Industrial (HG 4961 M673), and OTC Unlisted (HG 4961 M47).

Datamonitor360: You can search by Industry, Geography and Company. The database provides market profiles, company profiles, SWOT analyses, industry reports and briefings, financial deals, news and more.

Global Marketing Information Database (GMID): Produced by Euromonitor, GMID provides information on countries, companies, industries, and consumers. Demographic, economic and marketing statistics for 205 countries; historic and forecast consumer lifestyle statistics; analysis of consumer lifetsyles in 71 countries; market size for more than 300 consumer products; 4500 market research reports; profiles and rankings of 3000 leading consumer goods companies.

Business Insights : Provides information on the following industry sectors: Consumer goods, Healthcare, Energy, Financial Services, and Technology. The Market Profiles include market segmentation, overview and size, competitive landscape, leading companies, forecasts, and news and comment. Company profiles cover company and business description, history, key employees, leading competitors, SWOT analysis, and links to the latest news. Of interest will be the Country Profiles with macro-economic data, political summary, economic summary, population data, industrial sectors and key facts.

Business Monitor Online : contains quarterly surveys and forecasts on a number of industries.

Finding Articles about Industries and Companies

Information on companies and industries and business topics may be found by searching the databases listed below for journal, magazine, trade publications, and newspaper articles.

ProQuest Business: This link allows you to access the 6 preselected ProQuest business databases. The 6 databases are ABI/Inform Global, ABI/Inform Trade and Industry, CBCA Business, CBCA Current Events, ProQuest Asian Business and Reference, ProQuest European Business. These databases contain citations and abstracts for business and management publications, many of which are available in full-text or full-image. This resource incorporates management, industry and company-specific information of both a practical and theoretical nature. Subjects covered include: finance, public administration, marketing, management, economics, taxation, telecommunications, corporate strategies, competitive and product information.

Factiva : Factiva includes nearly 9,000 sources from 118 countries in 22 languages, including more than 120 continuously updated newswires. There are several ways to find information: company/markets, industry, and free-text searching for newspaper and journal articles. More than 900 sources are available on or before the date of publication. Features coverage of approx. 300,000 companies worldwide with information from Reuters, Dow Jones, Hoovers, Dun & Bradstreet and more. For newspapers, the service provides same-day and archival coverage of The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Washington Post, The Globe and Mail, Financial Times, Les Echos, South China Morning Post, Australian Financial Review, Sydney Morning Herald, Straits Times, Yomiuri Shimbun, and local newspapers from every corner of the globe. General business and industry publications like The Economist, Forbes, Fortune, Time, Newsweek, Finanz & Wirtschaft, Satellite News, Business Week, and more.

Lexis-Nexis Academic : Makes available over 30,000 news, business, and legal information sources. Included are current international newspapers, as well as comprehensive company and industry reports. Information available includes trade and marketing reports, patent details, merger and acquisitions analysis, country reports, and industry and legal publications. Lexis-Nexis Academic also provides access to numerous reference tools, including biographical information and company directories.

Country Information

Europa World Plus : Online version of the Europa World Year Book and nine regional surveys. Contains news, information and selected data on countries worldwide.

Global Insight : Provides country analysis, risk and forecasts for 196 countries. Political, economic, regulatory, tax, security and general business conditions are covered in the individual country reports. In addition macroeconomic forecasts are provided and country and sovereign risk ratings are included. Information is updated regularly and occasionally daily when conditions warrant it.

Doing Business: Benchmarking Business Regulations : provides objective measures of business regulations and their enforcement. The Doing Business indicators are comparable across 175 economies. They indicate the regulatory costs of business and can be used to analyze specific regulations that enhance or constrain investment, productivity, and growth. Published by the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation.

Doing Business Database from the World Bank : Provides objective measures of business regulations and their enforcement across 183 economies including a few cities.

Doing Business Guides : prepared by the US Dept of Commerce, this website provides information on doing business with many countries worldwide and includes basic statistics and some market research information.

Business Monitor Online : Provides industry overviews and country information for countries around the world. Includes company profiles of multinational companies. Has forecasting information.
