Library Catalogue
The YULibrary Catalogue is a tool you should come to rely on again and again when doing your library research. This is because it allows you to search for all the print and electronic materials owned by the libraries by title, author, keyword, and more. Many of the books relating to the field of Business Ethics are located at the Business Library. There is also a growing collection of relevant e-books. The catalogue can be used, however, to find materials other than books including journal titles (for both print and electronic journals), government information, legal materials, videos, and much more. It also includes reserve materials (short-term loan items) and reference items.
Check out this search tips guide for strategies on how to search the catalogue to best effect.

Specialized Database: Sustainability Research
Sustainalytics: has environmental, social and corporate governance reports for over 1200 publicly-traded North American companies. For each, you can get a
- full company report
- company rating report, which just gives the ratings in ESG categories, or
- controversy report, which just covers controversies
Sustainalytics makes their ratings and decisions based on public evidence and they give their citations, so you can follow up on issues if you want to.
It’s also possible to do comparative reports and generate spreadsheets that compare company ESG ratings.
Interestingly, Jantzi, the company that makes Sustainalytics, also puts its data to use in an exchange-traded fund for investors: it runs the Jantzi Social Index, “a socially screened, market capitalization-weighted common stock index modeled on the S&P/TSX 60 consist[ing] of 60 Canadian companies that pass a set of broadly based environmental, social, and governance rating criteria.” Track its performance at The Globe and Mail’s web site for investors: iShares Jantzi Social ETF.
Company Filings/Annual Reports
Note that the Investor Relations section of publicly-traded companies’ web sites typically includes filings including annual reports.
Canada
All companies that report to the Canadian Securities Administrator, e.g. those listed on the TSX, must file annual reports, quarterly statements, management discussion and more on SEDAR .
United States
Companies traded on U.S. stock exchanges must file their documents on the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) EDGAR database. Please note annual reports on EDGAR are actually 10-K documents and not the traditional annual report. They contain much more information.
International
If you are looking for annual reports for companies outside of North America, Mergent Web Reports is recommended.
Business Ethics web sites
The Business Ethics subject research guides features a list of recommended web sites.
Introduction to Academic Integrity
Once you have selected relevant business articles for your research, one important final step involves compiling an accurate list of references or citations to incorporate within your essay or project. Referencing the items you used for your research is an important part of academic work, and is paramount to avoiding plagiarism. To learn more about plagiarism and the importance of academic integrity, see the Academic Integrity Tutorial available on the York’s website.
Citation Styles
Note that some style guides are available on the web and the Libraries’ web site offers a guide to these sources, including guides to using APA style. McGill University’s Howard Ross Management Library has created a guide to citing business sources using APA style, which includes e-resources also available to York University students.
