This guide is an introduction to selected sources used to research the consulting industry in North America and to library e-resources which provide access to analyst reports. This brief guide has been compiled with the goal of supporting research projects undertaken by students enrolled in SGMT 3000..

The sources listed below are available electronically at the Peter F. Bronfman Business Library. York University students, faculty and staff may access the electronic resources remotely by using the proxy server and signing on with their Passport York ID.

General Library Information
Library Homepage The Library’s homepage is your portal to the library catalogue, where you will find our extensive collection of print and electronic materials (Books and eBooks, journals and eJournals, databases, videos, maps, etc.), as well as to information about the libraries, research issues such as citation and finding the materials you need, and practical tasks like booking study rooms, or renewing library books.
Undergraduate Library Guide Includes basic libraries’ information including getting a library card, hours, locations, borrowing/renewing materials, library eResources links and information, connecting to eResources from home and more.
Bronfman Business Library web site
Help with Research Bronfman Business Library’s Help with Research page includes contact information for research help at the library, and access to a variety of research guides that are helpful for conducting business research.
Industry sources: Consulting industry in North America
IBISWorld USA: Excellent for industry reports and analysis for the United States including coverage of niche industries. Search using the keyword “consulting”. Reports available include: IT Consulting in the US, Management Consulting in the US, HR Consulting in the US, Environmental Consulting in the US, and Scientific and Economic Consulting in the US. Areas of coverage include industry performance, industry outlook, products and markets, competitive landscape, major companies, operating conditions and key statistics.
Marketline Advantage. Do a keyword search for “consulting” and then using the “By Geography” limit which displays in the right-hand menu area, limit results to North America. A report on Management and Marketing Consultancy in the United States appears at the top of the list of results. This includes market segmentation data as well as a Five Forces Analysis. It also contains information on leading companies including Deloitte Touche, Ernst & Young, McKinsey & Company, and PricewaterhouseCoopers International.
Note it is also possible to search individual consulting firms in this database, e.g. search McKinsey and limit to “Companies” in the main search area. A detailed record displays including a SWOT analysis (SWOT analyses are available for larger companies only).
Plunkett Research: Primarily US information but some Canadian information is available. Click on “Consulting” under the “Industry Research Centers” listing. Provides information about market research and trends, as well as statistics of relevance to the consulting industry in the United States.
Proquest Business: Click on the “Data & Reports” tab when the home page of the database loads. Then do a keyword search for “consulting”. Recent reports on the consulting services industry published by First Research appear in the results list. These reports are produced quarterly and provide excellent coverage of this industry in the United States.

Investext Plus
Internet Explorer must be used to access this database. It provides analyst reports from investment banks and consulting firms. Go to Company Views > Research; or go to Screening & Analysis > Research.
Lexis Nexis Academic
Select Companies > Company Dossier > Search for a company in the left hand column and then under Financials select Analyst Reports
Bloomberg
Available in the Bronfman Business Library only.
For analyst reports, type the ticker > EQUITY > BRC > GO.
For analyst recommendations, type the ticker > EQUITY > ANR > GO.
The database is available on a stand alone workstation in the Bronfman Business Library.
Value Line Investment Survey
Provides short introductory reports on each industry and detailed 1-2 page reports on the key companies in each industry. How to use Value Line
