September 26, 1985 Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney
formally requests the United States and
Canada start negotiations on a U.S.-
Canada Free Trade Agreement.
December 10, 1985 President Reagan notifies the Congress
of his intention to enter into a
bilateral negotiation with Canada.
June 17, 1986 Negotiations begin to establish a free
trade agreement.
October 3, 1987 A basic free trade agreement is
initialled.
December 9, 1987 Final text completed.
January 2, 1988 President of the United States and Prime
Minister of Canada sign the agreement.
September 28, 1988 The U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement
Implementation Act of 1988 is passed by
Congress and signed into law by the
President.
December 30, 1988 The Agreement is approved by the
Canadian Parliament.
January 1, 1989 The Canada-United States Free Trade
Agreement takes effect following an
exchange of diplomatic notes.
