NonProfit Resource Management Guide
This guide is designed to help students find research materials about nonprofit organizations including multi-disciplinary aspects such as management, accounting, marketing, human resources, planning and fund raising. It highlights some of the key tools but is not intended as a comprehensive list of resources. The sources listed below are available in print via the Library catalogue or electronically via the York University Libraries web site, or the Internet.

To find books and other materials in the York catalogue ( www.library.yorku.ca), try terms such as: nonprofit organizations, voluntarism, charities, fund raising, and philanthropists in the keyword field.
Indexes and Abstract Databases
This resource incorporates management, industry and company-specific information of both a practical and theoretical nature. Subjects covered include: finance, health administration, public administration, marketing, management, economics, taxation, telecommunications, corporate strategies, competitive and product information. Contains citations and abstracts for over 1100 business and management publications. More than 700 of these titles are available in full-text or full-image. (note: ABI/Inform Global, Trade and Industry and CBCA may be combined into one search)
A database with full-text coverage of over 700 publications, especially trade publications, with articles about individual trades and industries. Coverage is available for industries in different geographical areas including Canada and the United States. Updates are continuous and full-text is available for some publications back to early 1990′s.
N.B. ABI/Inform Global and Trade and Industry are only two of the many ProQuest databases available. When you open up any of the ProQuest databases you can select all of the databases in which you wish to search, by clicking on Databases Selected in the upper left of the screen and then choose the ones you desire. Return to the top of the screen and click on Continue.
Provides interdisciplinary coverage of Canadian topics including the areas of business and current affairs. Offers references, and many full text articles, from Canadian journals, magazines, newspapers, and newswires. Dates of coverage vary by title but many full-text titles available from early or mid-1990s, while citations for many publications available from early 1980s onward. Consult CBCA Business , a subcomponent of the CBCA Complete database, in order to limit search specifically to Canadian business journals and magazines, but note that newspaper and newswire coverage are not offered by this product, and coverage of business topics in non-business publications is also not available. Available on the network but restricted to the York University community.
Business Source Premier
Contains full text for 7,792 periodicals and other sources, including scholarly journals, trade and general business magazines, monographs, country economic and industry reports, industry yearbooks, and market research reports. Available on the network but restricted to members of the York University community.
Scholars Portal
Provides a single point of electronic access to published research from a broad range of disciplines Journals published by Academic Press, Berkeley Electronic Press , Cambridge University Press, Emerald Publishing, Elsevier Science, Kluwer, Oxford University Press, Project Muse, Springer Verlag, and John Wiley & Sons . Search business topics by selecting Search button and typing relevant keywords, or browse individual publication titles.
Indexes Canadian and international academic journals, magazines, and newspapers. All subjects are represented and articles on health administration and the health industry in Canada are included. Many articles are full text. Coverage is from 1988 – present.
PAIS: Public Affairs Information Service
Indexes scholarly journal articles, books, government publications, web sites, and reports of public, intergovernmental, and private organizations. A useful source for public policy, environmental and social issues. Coverage is from 1972 – present.
Factiva
Features coverage of approx. 300,000 companies worldwide with information from Reuters, Dow Jones, Hoovers, Dun & Bradstreet and more. Includes nearly 9,000 sources from 118 countries in 22 languages, including more than 120 continuously updated newswires and general business and industry publications like The Economist, Forbes, Fortune, Time, Newsweek, Finanz & Wirtschaft, Satellite News, Business Week. Available on the network but restricted to the York University community.
This service makes available over 30,000 news, business, and legal information sources. Included are current international newspapers, as well as comprehensive company and industry reports.Information available includes trade and marketing reports, patent details, merger and acquisition analysis, country reports and industry and legal publications. Lexis-Nexis also provides access to numerous reference tools, including biographical information, company directories, quotations and Who’s Who titles. .

The following journals focus on issues related to nonprofit organizations. They are available in electronic and/or print format from York University Libraries. If accessing these journals online from off-campus locations, remember you will be prompted for your library barcode and pin (a current library card is required) before access is granted. Canada
Charities Directorate The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) registers qualifying organizations as charities, gives technical advice on operating a charity, and handles audit and compliance activities. Registered charities are required to file an annual return with the CRA, a portion of which is available to the public.
Imagine Canada is a national charitable organization whose cause is Canada’s charities and nonprofits. The organization works on a variety of issues and challenges that face the sector, often in partnership, including funding, human resources, volunteerism, governance, sector accountability and better understanding of the sector through research.
Summary of the Findings of the National Survey of Nonprofit and Voluntary Organizations (NSNVO) The National Survey of Nonprofit and Voluntary Organizations, conducted in 2003, is the first comprehensive study of nonprofit and voluntary organizations in Canada, and provides essential baseline information about these organizations.

Participating in Federal Public Policy is a resource to help voluntary organizations participate in the federal public policy development process. It also gives federal government departments insight into how to involve their voluntary sector counterparts more effectively. The Guide is funded by Human Resources Development Canada through the Capacity Joint Table of the Voluntary Sector Initiative.

Guidestar: The National Database of Nonprofit Organizations Gathers and publicizes information about nonprofit organizations.
Internal Revenue Service. Search for Charities Publication 78, Cumulative List of Organizations described in Section 170(c) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, is a list of organizations eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions.
National Council of Nonprofit Organizations Serves as the national voice for small and midsize nonprofits and is dedicated to keeping up-to-date on policy matters affecting nonprofits at the federal and state levels in the US.
National Center for Charitable Statistics is the national clearinghouse of data on the nonprofit sector in the United States. It develops and disseminates high quality data on nonprofit organizations and their activities for use in research. NCCS builds compatible national, state, and regional databases and develops uniform standards for reporting on the activities of charitable organizations.
Center on Philantrophy at Indiana University, a leading academic center dedicated to increasing the understanding of philanthropy and improving its practice through research, teaching, public service and public affairs.
Society for Nonprofit Organizations is one of the oldest and largest nonprofit management support organizations in the US. On the website there is a section on nonprofit links divided by various subjects at http://www.snpo.org/resources/links.php.
Board Source, formerly the National Center for Nonprofit Boards is dedicated to advancing the public good by building exceptional nonprofit boards and inspiring board service. BoardSource supports and promotes excellence in board service, providing resources related to nonprofit boards.
