Bloomberg is a global leader in providing financial information about publicly traded companies worldwide as well as news and economic data. The ability to obtain data quickly is critical to financial professionals.

The training videos are intended for new users of Bloomberg and teach the basics of the systems and some basic functionality within each of the primary market sectors. The content is reviewed quarterly and updated as needed. The videos are for use at the Bloomberg workstation only and may not be downloaded.

Students who wish to apply for positions in the Finance industry should consider taking the Bloomberg Essentials Online Training Program. The program will also be of interest to students who wish to use the Bloomberg workstation (located in the Peter F. Bronfman Business Library) more efficiently.

The courses are free but registration is required.

You can book a time to use the Bloomberg workstation via our online booking system. Bloomberg booking is the last column on the right hand side of the Bronfman Business Library Group Study Room Booking page.

Who can take the training program?

Only students currently enrolled in York University courses are eligible to enroll in the Bloomberg Essential Online Training Program.

What is involved in successfully completing the training program?

You need to successfully complete four core courses plus one additional courses selected from the offering of four Market Sector videos . The videos range from17 minutes to 30 minutes in length. Please bring your own headset as the library does not provide these.  A list of the videos is provided at the end of this web page.

How to register to take the program

Please book a Bloomberg session through our online booking system, and come to the Bronfman Business Library to register for the program. There is only one workstation and all work must be completed at this workstation. Because of the demand the online booking system only allows you to book one session a day. During the school term, in order to allow students working on assignments time to use the workstation, students who are working on the training program should only book outside of the high use times. Training bookings should be made before 11 am and after 7 pm including weekends when necessary. If you miss more than two sessions, the library reserves the right to cancel your bookings. IF YOU ARE FIVE MINUTES LATE YOUR BOOKING TIME IS AUTOMATICALLY CANCELLED.

BLOOMBERG LOGIN: Each individual participant is required to have their own Bloomberg login in order to participate in the training program.

1. Type UREG on a Bloomberg terminal and hit green < GO> key and follow the prompts.
2. Alternately, you can leave the user name and password blank on initial Bloomberg login screen, hit green < GO> key, then follow the prompts.

N.B. Your individual login is only good for the training program and will be discontinued when you complete the program or if you do not use it within a month of signing up for the training program. The generic login must be used for general access to Bloomberg. Ask the reference staff to login if Bloomberg is not already active.

To begin the training program

1) Type BESS <GO> and watch the four core videos. Please bring your own headset as the library does not provide headsets.

EXAM – take the exam after watching all four videos. The pass is 75% – You can re-take the exam.

How many exams can you take?

You can complete all 5 exams (1 core and 4 Market Sector) if you would like to receive acknowledgment in all four market sectors but you can receive acknowledgment in one market sector only by successfully completing the core exam and the exam in the market sector of your choice.

Select 10) <GO> from the BESS page and request that you be enabled to for the Core, Equity, Fixed Income, FX or Commodity

SCORES: A grade of 75% or greater must be achieved in order to pass each course.

How to receive the acknowledgement document

Select 11) <GO> from the BESS page and provide how you would like your name displayed on the document and the email address you would like it sent to along with the market sector you completed.  Please allow 2 weeks for delivery.  No paper/hard copies will be provided in keeping with Bloomberg’s environmental efforts.
