Booking an Instructional Session
Requesting an Instructional Session for Your Students
The goal of the instruction librarians at the Bronfman Business Library is to collaborate with faculty to enhance the information literacy competencies of business students
- by introducing them to the best resources to meet their research needs
- by demonstrating effective search strategies
- by teaching them the value of critically evaluating the source
- by stressing the importance of citing sources to avoid plagiarism
- contribute to the course Moodle or CMD by providing links to online resources
Information literate individuals have the ability to define their information needs, to find information efficiently and to critically evaluate what they have found in order to integrate it into their work.
We have included a link to Information Literacy in a Business Context which elaborates on this topic and provides links to related readings and Web Sites.
Faculty who wish to arrange a library instructional session and/or supporting web guide for a business program or course are advised to consult the information provided below.
Time and Place
Depending upon the size of the class, library instructional sessions may be provided either in the library’s electronic classroom (S236, SSB – adjacent to the Bronfman Business Library) or in the lecture hall or classroom where the class normally meets. The library’s electronic classroom offers the advantage of supporting an interactive teaching environment where integration of hands-on activities can be easily facilitated.
Scheduling and Documentation
Business librarians appreciate two weeks advance notice for requested instructional sessions where possible to facilitate effective planning. If possible, we also ask that course instructors supply us with a current course syllabus and list of assignments; having this material allows us to customize our workshops and lectures so that we meet your students at point of need. We are always happy to meet with faculty to collaborate in developing a meaningful library instruction session. Note that business librarians also typically compile a customized web guide for students to direct them to key information resources to support coursework and assignments. Examples of previously created course related web guides are available on the web site.
