Audio CD or DVD Video?

Definition: These items have separate physical discs, at least one being an audio compact disc and at least one being a DVD. For instructions on cataloguing hybrid discs see the procedures for Audio DualDiscs. For help identifying the material consult the document “Distinguishing Between Optical Disc Types”.

A primary format must be decided. Determine whether the item is considered to primarily be a sound recording or a video recording; examine the packaging and marketing material. Is the material primarily music? Is it packaged as a sound recording? Is it in a jewel case or a DVD case?

For example the collection ” Tales of a Librarian” by Tori Amos is packaged and marketed primarily as audio material, in comparison with ” Mambo Italiano” which is packaged and marketed primarily as video material.

If the item is determined to primarily be a sound recording process as for audio sound recordings.

If the item is determined to be a DVD please give to Doug Adams for cataloguing.

Discs considered primarily audio sound recordings

  • Catalogue as one item and leave together in package if possible. If the DVD is in a separate package or jewel case but is the same size as the sound recordings leave in the package and treat as an added volume. Treat the DVD/videodisc as accompanying material and add necessary fields to describe the DVD.
  • Catalogue as for audio sound recordings and add necessary fields to describe the DVD.
  • Record format MUSIC, record type “j”
  • Create two 007 fields, one for the audio disc(s) and one for the DVD
  • Create a standard physical description field (300) for audio discs and add information to describe the DVD. e.g. 300 1 sound disc :| bdigital ;|c4 3/4 in. +|e1 videodisc (sd., col. ; 4 3/4 in.).
  • Include a 500 note for physical format. e.g. 500 Compact disc; DVD.
  • Add a 538 Technical requirements field if technical requirements are stated on the item. For example a 538 will be required if there is a DVD-ROM.
  • Record 505 content note as for compact discs. Take the wording and format from the item itself. If no content note is given for the DVD content create a 500 notes which summarises the content.
  • Do not add a 593 note as discs will be found in the same place
  • The call number suffix is CD+DVD. eg: DISC R.2764501 CD+DVD See the Procedures for Call Numbers for further information.
  • The item type is AUDIO-CD.
  • Note: It is not necessary to create a holdings record for accompanying material.
