Setting Up a Validator Session
| 1. | Using the OCLC workstation, click on the Validator icon |
| 2. | Search and save a record |
| 3. | "Open" box appears |
| 4. | Double click on "saved" (right box under C:progra~1validatr) to indicate the directory where the records will be saved |
| 5. | Enter the name of the file in the left box — "mmdd.dat" (e.g. 0716.dat) |
| 6. | Click on OK |
Searching and Saving Instructions
| 1. | Click on Validator icon from task bar (bottom of screen) |
| 2. | Check for the search type before beginning – the default seems to change between Names and Subjects. FOR NAMES (includes personal names, titles and series) |
| 3. | Type name or title in search request window (be sure to include punctuation – e.g. Smith, Richard, 1945- ) |
| 4. | Press "Enter" or click on "Go get it" |
| 5. | Entry is highlighted and displayed in left window (HIT LIST) – Double click on entry to display record (NOTE: Names with a single given name + date file AFTER names with multiple given names – e.g. Smith, Richard, 1945- will file after Smith, Richard John) |
| 6. | Click on second icon from left to save record (DO NOT double click!) |
| 7. | Print record (3rd button from left) and put printout in box beside terminal |
| 8. | If you are not sure whether you have saved a record, click on icon of check mark in right corner to "Review session" (Click on OK to close) FOR SUBJECTS |
| 9. | Click on the "S" (Subject) button to change from Names to subject |
| 10. | Type subject heading in search request window and proceed as for names searching above |
| 11. | DO NOT close Validator when you are finished. Click on minimize button (dash in upper right-hand corner) |
| 12. | If you accidently close the session, please advise Doug Adams, Heather Fraser, or Carol Ohlers. NOTE: If there is more than one authority in the list of hits that you want to export (e.g. a subject with various subdivisions), double click on each one separately and save each separately. |
COPYING FILE TO DISK USING "MY COMPUTER"
| 1. | Insert disk in drive A |
| 2. | Double click on "My computer" icon |
| 3. | Double click on "A" |
| 4. | Double click on "C" |
| 5. | Double click on folder for "PROGRAM FILES" in "C" window |
| 6. | Double click on "VALIDATOR" |
| 7. | Double click on "SAVED" |
| 8. | Locate the file you wish to transfer (e.g. 0709.dat) |
| 9. | Click and drag the file from C drive to A drive |
| 10. | Make sure it has been copied (check to see that it's in the A drive window) |
| 11. | Close everything |
| 12. | Remove disk and label with the name of the file |
COPYING FILE TO DISK USING MS-DOS
| 1. | Double click on "MS-DOS prompt" icon |
| 2. | At C:WINDOWS type: cd Press ENTER |
| 3. | AT C:> type: cdprogra~1validatrsaved Press ENTER |
| 4. | At C:>progra~1validatrsaved type: dir Press ENTER |
| 5. | Find the file you want to copy (e.g. 0709.dat) |
| 6. | At C:>progra~1validatrsaved type: copy (filename) a: (e.g. copy 0709.dat a: Press ENTER |
| 7. | System responds with "1 file copied" |
| 8. | Type cd Press ENTER |
| 9. | At C:> prompt type exit Press ENTER |
| 10. | Remove disk and label it with the name of the file |
