CATALOGUE ENHANCEMENT

This month we used our new and greatly improved procedures to check links to electronic resources in Yorkline. A Yorkline report, run monthly, to extract URLs from Yorkline, is now processed by a program created by Doug Fenwick. This program processes the Yorkline report in SECONDS and produces an HTML file suitable for running against a link checker. This new method eliminates several time consuming and cumbersome steps which were required to turn the Yorkline report into an HTML document in the former procedures. I want to thank Doug for his work to make the "link checking" process easier for us, especially since there are now over 12,000 URLS in Yorkline.

COMPUTING

Four of the new computers for Bibliographic Services were installed in early January. H. Fraser and C. Ohlers worked with H. Tsui of Library Computing to create an "image" appropriate for Bibliographic Services workstations. Despite our best efforts, it proved to be difficult to replicate the image from machine to machine. This required follow up visits from LCS staff to correct problems. As a result however, we now have a New Computer Checklist which itemizes the software required for our workstations as well as various settings which must be checked. This document will be helpful when the other new computers arrive and also on an on-going basis if machines must be replaced.

We were pleased to welcome both Marcia Salmon as Adjunct Cataloguing Librarian on January 3rd and also Johanna Herman who joined the department on January 29th working half time as Administrative/Bibliographic Assistant to help out with Rita Carcasole's duties.

H. Fraser attended the Ontario Library Association conference on January 31 and Feb. 1.
