Borrow from York

Getting a library card

All graduate students in degree programs are issued a YU-card. The YU-card serves as the only library borrowing card.

Loan periods

Graduate students automatically receive extended 100 day loans on material designated for regular loan from Frost, Law, Scott, Steacie Libraries. Material from the Peter F. Bronfman Library is not available for extended loan, except for doctoral students. Unless requested by another borrower, these materials may be renewed twice. Items with more than one hold are loaned for 7 days only and are not renewable.

Faculty and doctoral graduate students with extended loan privileges, have a loan limit of 80 items at any given time; other graduate students have a limit of 50.

Recalled materials

While a graduate student has material out on loan, any other member of the York community can order that material for use by using the Rush Recall service. Rush recalls can be placed on material at any time during the 100 day loan period. Recalled material must be returned within 2 weeks or it will be considered overdue.

Notices are sent when materials are overdue or have been recalled for another borrower. The non-receipt of overdue or recall notices does not relieve the borrower from liability for fines or other sanctions.

Renewing materials

Materials which you have checked out, designated for regular loan, may be renewed online, as long as no holds apply, and fines do not exceed an amount of $25. To renew books online you will need to supply your Passport York information. Graduate students can renew regular material twice.

To assist borrowers to return or renew materials on time, courtesy alert notices are sent shortly before regular loans are due. Failure to receive such notices does not relieve borrowers of the responsibility to return books by the due date.

If you encounter difficulty renewing material, please contact Circulation Services at any Library branch during business hours. You can always renew materials in person at the Circulation Desk in Bronfman, Frost, Law, Scott and Steacie Libraries. Please note you must have your library card and books you are renewing in hand.

Fines

  • Fine rate on overdue stack loans: $.50 per day to a maximum of $25.00 per item.
  • Fine rate on overdue recalled materials $1.00 per day to a maximum of $25.00 per item.
  • Other types of material have different fine rates. Please see: https://www.library.yorku.ca/ccm/BorrowRenew/PayingFines
