Importing citations into Refworks from specific databases
Most of York University Libraries’ databases are provided by a vendor (a company that facilitates access to the database). To get instructions for a particular database, find the database on the list below and click on its vendor (e.g. for America History and LIfe, click EBSCOhost).

BioMedCentral (Database Search)
- Perform search and view results.
- Mark records you wish to export to Refworks.
- Next to the blue SEND button, select “selected items” in the first box.
- In the second box, select REFWORKS +ABSTRACTS or REFWORKS (NO ABSTRACTS).
- Click the blue SEND button.
- If you are logged into Refworks, a pop up page will confirm the export. If you are not logged into Refworks, you will be prompted to enter your Refworks username and password.

BioMedCentral (E-Journal Search)
- Perform search and view results.
- Click on the title of the article.
- On the right side, there is a panel. Click DOWNLOAD CITATIONS under the “Tools” heading.
- A new page will appear, select “article citation” and “refworks.”
- Click the DOWNLOAD CITATIONS button.
- If you are logged into Refworks, a pop up page will confirm the export. If you are not logged into Refworks, you will be prompted to enter your Refworks username and password.

BioOne E-Journals
- Perform search and view results.
- Mark records you wish to export to Refworks.
- Click the DOWNLOAD CITATION MANAGER link.
- A new page will appear to confirm the marked records, click on the DOWNLOAD ARTICLE CITATION DATA button.
- Click OK and save the file in a location you will remember.
- Open your RefWorks account and under the “References” tab, click IMPORT.
- A new page will appear, select the following:
- In the first box (Import Filter/Data Source), select “Refworks Tagged Format”
- In the second box (Database), select “Tagged Format”
- In the third box, save the records in a folder created by you (DO NOT SELECT “Last Imported”).
8. Click “Browse” and find the file that you saved. Click “Open” to add it to Refworks.
9. Click the “Import” button near the bottom of the page to upload the file.

CAIRN
- Conduct a search and mark your records by clicking on the “Ajouter à ma bibliographie” icon.
- Click “Ma Bibliographie” at the bottom of the page.
- Click “Exporter vers…Refworks”.
- If you have not already logged in to RefWorks, you will be prompted for your RefWorks login and password.
- From within RefWorks, click on the View Last Imported Folder button to see your references.
Chadwyck-Healey
- Perform search and view results.
- Mark records you wish to export to RefWorks.
- Click on MARKED LIST (link is near top of screen).
- Click on DOWNLOAD CITATIONS.
- Click on EXPORT DIRECTLY TO REFWORKS .
- If you are logged into Refworks, a pop up page will confirm the export. If you are not logged into Refworks, you will be prompted to enter your Refworks username and password.

- Mark records you wish to export to Refworks by clicking on ADD TO FOLDER.
- Near the top right corner, click on FOLDER.
- Select the items you wish to export and then click on the Export icon (it is shaped like a paper with a green arrow).
- Select DIRECT EXPORT TO REFWORKS and click SAVE.
- If you are logged into Refworks, a pop up page will confirm the export. If you are not already logged into RefWorks, you will be prompted to enter your Refworks username and password.

- Perform search and view results.
- Mark records you wish to export to Refworks.
- Click SELECTED RECORDS (it is located at the top right corner).
- A new page will appear, select CITATION and click the blue DOWNLOAD button.
- A pop up page will appear, select REFWORKS DIRECT IMPORT and click the grey DOWNLOAD button.
- If you are logged into Refworks, a pop up page will confirm the export. If you are not aleady logged into Refworks, you will be prompted to enter your Refworks username and password.

- Perform search and mark desired records by clicking the checkboxes.
- Click “Enregistrer votre sélection” at the top of your search results.
- Click “Voir votre liste de notices” (beside the above link).
- Click “Exporter les notices dans Refworks” in the left sidebar.
- If you have not already logged in to RefWorks, you will be prompted for your RefWorks login and password.
- From within RefWorks, click on the View Last Imported Folder button to see your references.
GALE InfoTrac
NOTE: There have been problems with the export of citations from Gale InfoTrac databases to RefWorks. Check what is imported into RefWorks to make sure that the content is correct.
- Perform search and view results.
- Mark records you wish to export to RefWorks.
- Click MARKED ITEMS.
- Click on the black icon with a “c” at the top right corner. It is also known as “citation tools.”
- A new page will pop up. Scroll to the bottom. Select REFWORKS and click EXPORT.
- If you are logged into Refworks, a pop up page will confirm the export. If you are not already logged into RefWorks, you will be prompted to enter your Refworks username and password.

Google Scholar
NOTE: There are problems with this feature. It does not work if you are off-campus. Also, Google in some cases is not exporting complete data to RefWorks. Use with caution.
- Click on SCHOLAR PREFERENCES next to the search box.
- Scroll below to the “Bibliography Manager” and check the SHOW LINKS TO IMPORT CITATIONS INTO .
- Select REFWORKS from the drop box.
- Click SAVE PREFERENCES
- After performing a search, view the results and click the IMPORT INTO REFWORKS link.
- If you are logged into Refworks, a pop up page will confirm the import. If you are not already logged into Refworks, you will be prompted to enter your Refworks username and password.

- Mark records you wish to export to Refworks.
- Click on the “Export Bibliographic References” icon (it is shaped like a book and located at the top right corner).
- A pop up page will appear, the format will be automatically set to REFWORKS DIRECT EXPORT. “Tagged Documents” are the records you have marked for export.
- Click EXPORT.
- If you are logged into Refworks, a pop up page will confirm the export. If you are not already logged into Refworks, you will be prompted to enter your Refworks username and password.

- In the “Results Manager” box (located at the top and bottom of the page), ensure that the following have been checked:
- Results: Selected Results
- Fields: Complete Reference

4. Check EXPORT RESULTS TO REFWORKS and click CONTINUE.
5. If you are logged into Refworks, a pop up page will confirm the export. If you are not already logged into Refworks, you will be prompted to enter your Refworks username and password.

- Click on the MY RESEARCH tab (located near the top of the page).
- A new page will appear, click on the EXPORT CITATIONS INTO ENDNOTE, PROCITE, REFWORKS OR REFERENCE MANAGER link.
- A new page will appear, click on the EXPORT DIRECTLY TO REFWORKS link.

- Under the “Search” tab, click ONLINE CATALOG AND DATABASE.
- Ensure that the “Online Catalog or Database to Search” is PUBMED.
- In the “Advanced Search For” section, find materials by author’s name (last name, first name), title or descriptor. Click SEARCH to obtain results.
- A results page will pop up in a separate window, mark the records you wish to keep.
- Near the top of the page, select a folder to keep the records ( Do not pick “Last Imported”).
- Click IMPORT.
- Click OK to accept.

PubMed (NLM) (Exporting from PubMed NLM)
- Perform search and view results.
- Mark records you wish to import to RefWorks.
- Click on the arrow next to SEND TO and select CLIPBOARD.
- Click the grey ADD TO CLIPBOARD button.
- Click on CLIPBOARD: # ITEM.
- Click on the arrow next to SEND TO and select FILE.
- In the drop box, change the “format” to MEDLINE and click the grey CREATE FILE button.
- Click SAVE and save the text file where it can be retrieved.
- Open your RefWorks account and under the “References” tab, click IMPORT.
- A new page will appear, select the following:
- In the first box (Import Filter/Data Source), select “NLM PubMed”
- In the second box (Database), select “PubMed”
- In the third box (Import References to Folder), select a folder created by you (DO NOT SELECT “Last Imported”).
8. Click “Browse” and find the file that you saved. Click “Open” to add it to Refworks.
9. Click the “Import” button near the bottom of the page to upload the file.

- Peform your search and view results.
- Mark records you wish to export to Refworks.
- Click REFWORKS (it is located near the top of the results).
- A new page will appear, select USE # MARKED RECORDS and click the EXPORT TO REFWORKS button.
- If you are logged into Refworks, a pop up page will appear confirming the export. If you are not logged into Refworks, you will be prompted to enter your Refworks username and password.

- Choose browse or search.
- Mark one or more article for export to RefWorks.
- Click on save selected.
- Click on My Articles to see the articles just saved in addition to previously saved articles.
- Select articles for export and click on Add to RefWorks.
- References are automatically exported directly to RefWorks. If you are not already logged in to RefWorks you will be prompted for your username and password.
Web of Science
- Perform search and view results.
- Mark records you wish to export to Refworks.
- Go to bottom of search results and click “Save to RefWorks”
Wilson
- Perform search and view the results.
- Mark records you wish to export to Refworks.
- Click on EXPORTING/CITING (it is located near the top of the page).
- Select REFWORKS’ DIRECT EXPORT TOOL and click the blue EXPORT button.
- If you are logged into Refworks, a pop up page will confirm the export. If you are not already logged into Refworks, you will be prompted to enter your Refworks username and password.
