CSE 1001 Research Directions in Computing

And your Assignment is!

Due date: Wednesday October 17th, 11:59pm.

To submit:

  • send and email to sshujah@yorku.ca (sshujah at yorku dot ca)
  • Subject line *must* have CSE 1001 in it.
  • Please include your name and student number.

What: Pick any CSE related topic and send me 4 references related to that topic

  • 1 book (print or ebook) that is available via the York Libraries (include catalogue url)
  • 1 journal article that is available via the York Libraries
  • 1 conference proceeding article that is available via the York Libraries
  • 1 site on the open web

Note: For the journal and conference article, I want an example of an article inside the journal or conference, not the name of the whole journal or conference.

Format:

  • In the email, list your topic then all four citations one after another
  • If the database has an exportable citation format (including BibTex), that is fine.
  • If not, use the Citation Machine and either APA or MLA format.
  • Online sources must have a URL that I can click on campus to access the item
  • For the book, please give the link to the catalogue record, if available

  • RefWorks site (Login) can help you manage your footnotes & bibliography on the web. Easy to use, interfaces directly with MS Word to create footnotes & bibliographies
    • For off campus use, get the York group code here.
    • FAQ and Instructions for various databases
    • RefWorks Tutorial
    • For ACM Digital Library & other databases like dblp, you can import from the bibtex format.
      • Use the References–>Import Feature
  • Key points:
  • Don’t forget to install Write-n-Cite on your PC. It’s in the Tools menu
  • Also don’t forget to move items out of the “Last Imported” folder into the folder you create for your course
  • Lastly, don’t forget to use “Edit citation” in the Write-n-cite application to get page numbers!
