Picking a Topic |
Find something you’re interested, make sure it’s not too general or too specific. Have a plan B.
My topic: Samuel R. Delany & images of sexuality
Plan b: blade runner & alien // alienation in science fiction
Finding Books |
- Do a keyword search in Library Catalogue:
- science fiction and history and criticism
- science fiction and american history and criticism
- example or author or subject: Dick, Philip k or Delany, Samuel R
- Google Books Search — Can be a good way to find relevant books.
Finding Articles |

- Literature Online — indexes major literary journals, with some full text. Can find scholarly articles by author, ie. articles about PKD.
- MLA database — Indexes major journals.
- JSTOR — another great full text source
- Research Library — mostly full text, another good source for journal articles
- FIAF’s International Index to Film/TV Periodicals — for articles on sf films, lots of full text
Using the Internet Wisely |
- Using Google as a scholarly research tool:
- Find a good portal site
- remember: who, why and when
- Google Scholar — can be pretty good but a little lacking in articles on literature and film. Can be a good way to find relevant books.
