SSH Room

Silent Study Hall (SSH!), Scott Library

As a silent study alternative in Scott Library, the Libraries have developed a Silent Study Hall (SSH!). Room 204, which will accommodate up to 40 people, is located on the second floor of Scott Library in the area to the north of the Information Desk. It is intended as an experimental, temporary, and partial solution to the shortage of quiet study space for undergraduate students in Scott Library. We ask all users of the room to help make this a success and cooperate with the rules listed below.

Library staff will check on the room several times per day to help maintain silence in the room. However, we encourage all users of the room to work to keep it silent by politely (and quietly) asking non-silent occupants to respect the intended silence.

Graduate students and faculty members are encouraged to use the Graduate Student Reading Room on the fourth floor for quiet study.

The Rules of the SSH!

  • The SSH! is open during all hours of general opening of Scott Library on a first come first served basis.
  • Please use the SSH! only for silent reading and writing.
  • Please open and close the door of the SSH! as quietly as possible; keep it open for as brief a time as possible when entering or leaving.
  • Please switch your cell phone ringer to vibrate mode – or better, turn off your phone entirely when inside the SSH! 
  • Please conduct all conversation outside of the SSH! - preferably some distance from it
  • As keyboarding creates noise that may disturb others, we ask users of the SSH! to do only minimal and  quiet keyboarding on their laptop computers.  Work requiring intensive typing should be done elsewhere in te library.
  • When in the SSH!, please do not listen to music even with good headphones; the room is small and meant for those who require silence.
  • Especially because the SSH! is an enclosed and silent space, please do not eat at all inside the room so as to avoid food smells and the sound of wrappers.
  • Because the SSH! is a small, enclosed space, as a courtesy to those with allergies, please avoid using the SSH! when wearing scented products .
  • Please place all litter in the appropriate container; do not leave any litter on the SSH! tables.
  • As always, personal items should not be left unattended in the SSH!; the Libraries will not be responsible for lost or stolen personal property.
