RACER Frequently Asked Questions

1. I forgot my password. How do I find out what it is?
You created your password when you first registered on RACER. Resource Sharing staff cannot retrieve your original password, but can reset it for you. Call us at (416) 736-5808 or e-mail us at racer@yorku.ca for help with setting a new password.
2. What’s my Login?
Your Login is your York ID number (your employee or student number).
3. I don’t have a library PIN.
A new student will not have a PIN. You can authenticate using Passport York. A faculty member may request a
PIN online.
4. I found the item I want in RACER. How do I request it?
Click on
Get It!
If you are requesting a book, you need only select your pickup location on the ILL Book form.
If you are requesting a journal article, you must also fill in the specific article information on the Journal Article ILL form, e.g. author’s name, article title, volume, issue and pages.
5. I did not find my item in RACER. How do I request it?
Click on “Blank Request Form” on the left hand toolbar under My Account and fill out a blank request form. Please note that there are separate forms for requesting books and journal articles.
6. Do I need to know what Library has my item before I request it?
No, Interlibrary Loan staff will locate the material for you.
7. How do I check the status of my request?
Login to RACER and click on My Account on the left hand toolbar, then click on GO!
A list of your requests will be displayed.
8. Why was my request cancelled?
The most common reason for a cancelled request is that the item is available at York, either in print or online. Please check the
Library Catalogue before submitting ILL requests. If the material you need has been signed out, you can place a Hold on it through the Library Catalogue.
Other reasons for cancellation are:- incomplete or inaccurate information- no library locations can be found, or item is non-circulating- the “need by” date in the request has expired
9. How will I be notified that my item has arrived and how do I get it?
You will be notified by e-mail when your material has arrived. Please read your e-mail messages carefully. You are responsible for monitoring the status of your requests.
Your material will be available for pickup at the location you selected when you submitted the request. Allow an hour for processing of Scott items. Material for Bronfman, Frost and Steacie will be available at those locations by noon the next day.
For those who registered an account number, journal articles will be mailed to your campus location, but books must be picked up in person.
Please return books in person to the same pick-up location, by the due date on the book band. Do not remove the book band.
10. I requested some material which has not come in yet. What should I do?
ILL material usually comes in within 5 to 10 working days, but may take longer depending on the lending library. Do not re-request the item. If the item is still listed under My Requests, please contact Resource Sharing staff. If the item is no longer listed under My Requests, please check your e-mail.
11. How can I cancel my request in RACER?
To cancel a request you previously made, use the Cancel icon. A canceled request will display in My Requests as Request No Longer Required. When Resource Sharing staff cancel the request, it will be removed from your My Requests list.
