Locating & Using Microtext Materials:
- Identify the item you wish to use. Most microtext materials are listed in the catalogue. Individual items in some research collections of documents are not listed in the catalogue, but are generally listed in an appropriate index (the collection and its index will be listed in the catalogue, however). Seek assistance with searching the catalogue or indexes and with identifying and locating appropriate collections and indexes at the Reference desk.
- Once you have located an item in the catatogue, be sure to note its format (e.g., microfilm or microfiche) and call number.
- Locate the appropriate cabinet in the Microtext area. Seek assistance with locating microtext items from the staff in the area.
- View the microfilm or microfiche at the appropriate reader. There are several microfilm and microfiche readers and one microcard reader. Some of these allow printing of microtext images onto paper ($0.09 per page, to be paid by means of a York University Libraries copycard).
- Operating instructions are posted on all readers. Please seek the assistance of area staff if necessary, however, and please inform them of any problem with a reader.
- When finished with a microfilm or microfiche, please leave it on the return table near the readers. Please do not attempt to replace the item in the cabinets.
Collections:
- Materials in Microtext consist of any documents that may be in microfilm or microfiche formats. Some items are on opaque microcards.
- Many guides and indexes to microfilm or microfiche research sets or newspapers e.g. The Times of London and the New York Times, are located within the Reference collection.
- Newspapers (catalogue call number: NEWS) are in microfilm cabinets by title in alphabetical order. Click here for a list of current newspapers held in Current Periodicals.
- Recent York University calendars are available for consultation by request at the Reference Desk. York University calendars older than 5 years are held in the Archives & Special Collections (3rd floor, Scott Library).
- Note that much of this information is now available via the Internet.
- Other periodicals, as well as books, theses and some research sets may be in the microfilm or microfiche cabinets - indicated in the library catalogue by MICROFICHE or MICROFILM. These are organized by call number.
- Some large collections of documents e.g. the CIHM or ERIC sets, are kept in separate microfiche cabinets and are arranged by document number.
Loans: Some materials may be taken out on loan (books, theses and CIHM and ERIC documents). Portable microfiche readers (a $20.00 refundable deposit required) may also be borrowed. These items must be checked out from and returned to the Microtext Desk. The loan period is two weeks.
