For classroom use of film, video, and DVD use the online classroom reservation form.

All material may be signed out for use in SMIL. Four hour loan items: reserve audio-tapes, reserve CDs, videotapes and DVDs may be signed out for overnight loan four hours before the unit closes. These items are due within an hour of opening the following day. Three day and seven day loan DVDs may be renewed on line only once. Most CDs may be signed out for seven days, and may also be renewed on line only once. Maximum amount of items charged out to a patron at any given time is five DVD/VHS and five CD’s. Fines apply to late returns.

Material must be returned to SMIL when the unit is open and to the external Audiovisual dropbox when SMIL is closed. The Audiovisual dropbox is located near the main Central Square entrance to the Scott Library.

A valid library card must be presented in order to sign out SMIL materials. External borrowers’ cards have limited access to SMIL materials. There are no holds on SMIL materials.

Material may not be signed out during the hour following its return by either the previous borrower or the returnee. Items returned within one hour of SMIL’s closing may not be signed out by either the previous borrower or the returnee until the following day.

Course reserves

Sound recordings, either owned by the library or privately, may be placed on reserve for restricted use by students. Because the DVD and video collection is available for classroom bookings, video reserves are limited to items we do not own. Faculty can place personal copies of legally acquired videotapes and DVDs on reserve for restricted use by students. Requests for reserves will be processed as soon as possible.

Keep the following in mind when considering a reserve request.
Is the class large enough to justify placing items on reserve?
Does SMIL own one or more copies of the material?
Will the demand for every reserve item be identical, or is it possible to limit the number of copies for low priority items?

Classroom use of films, DVDs and videorecordings

Most films, videorecordings and DVDs may be reserved for classroom screenings. This includes “home use” labelled items which are covered under SMIL’s site licencing agreements with commercial feature film distributors. Reservations for classroom screenings must be made at least two weekdays in advance to allow coordination with the Instructional Technology Centre (ITC) for the delivery of SMIL materials. Last minute bookings are possible, but patrons are responsible for the pick up and timely return of borrowed materials.

SMIL staff will also locate external sources for DVDs and videorecordings. Transportation and/or rental charges associated with the use of items from external sources are the responsibility of the individual borrower or academic department.

Reservations may be made by phone, mail, the Classroom Reservation form, or in person.
