Undercurrents- Beyond homework: Student engagement at York Wrapup

Beyond Homework: Student engagement at York was held in the Collaboratory at Scott Library on Thursday March 24th. It was the first Undercurrents event, a series that is hosted by the York University Libraries and aims at showcasing the work being done by Undergraduate students. This event specifically highlighted the extracurricular activities of four extraordinary students.

Brianna Roberts discussed her involvement with the theatre students association and planning the event called ‘Emmanuel Jal: We Want Peace’.

Brianna was followed by Michelle Cho’s accounts of her time working at a school in Tazmania.

Marcus Joo, who served as a very last minute replacement for another student that was unable to attend, spoke of his role as the president of York’s Mock UN team. He also spoke of the benefits of getting involved in a range of extracurricular activities as a student.

The event closed with Meara Tubman-Broeren who highlighted her work with York’s Sexual Assault Survivor’s Support Line as well as outlining the importance of student engagement.

Khalid Karim served as the moderator for the event and hosted a discussion with the whole panel following their presentations. Brianna even managed to rejoin the panel after dashing off to write an exam!

The Collaboratory worked well as a venue for an event of this type. Some students gathered on the hills to be actively involved in the event and many other students (reluctant to give up their prime seats at the tables) watched from surrounding areas. The audience and the participants all expressed their enjoyment as well as the hope that more events would held in the future.
