We recently acquired a series of new french-language digital historical collections from Gale.

The social and political upheavals of this period are detailed in this collection of newspapers and periodicals.

Providing perspectives from both the Vichy government and the resistance movement, this collection constitutes the sum of the French press that actually reached Britain during the Occupation of 1940-44. It is the record of what was known by the British about the hearts and minds of the French people at the most dramatic period of their shared history.


New: The Responsa Project

The Responsa Project contains an electronic collection of Torah literature and  encompasses a variety of Jewish sources representing a period of over three thousand years of heritage and tradition. All texts are fully typed in, proofread and hyper-linked. The database includes the Bible and its principal commentaries, the Talmud Bavli and Yerushalmi with commentaries, Midrashim, Zohar, Halachic Law (Rambam, Shulchan Aruch with commentaries) and Responsa collection – questions and answers (‘Shut’ in Hebrew).

New! Vietnam War and American Foreign Policy, 1960-1975

We recently acquired Vietnam War and American Foreign Policy, 1960-1975 from ProQuest.

Vietnam War and American Foreign Policy is Module 3 of ProQuest’s History Vault eResource.  It looks at foreign policy with a focus on 1960-75, however some of the collections start much earlier and others extend later allowing users to see, for example, the post-WWII evolution of Europe and decisions made with regard to Japan, as well as the events leading up to the American involvement in the Vietnam war and events in the war.  Events from around the world are included in this module including the Berlin Crisis, the Bay of Pigs, the Yom Kippur War and more.

British Literary Manuscripts

British Literary Manuscripts Online presents facsimile images of literary manuscripts, including letters and diaries, drafts of poems, plays, novels, and other literary works, and similar materials. Searching is based on tags and descriptive text associated with each manuscript. Images of the complete manuscript can be viewed, manipulated and navigated on screen. York has access to both Parts of British Literary Manuscripts Online: British Literary Manuscripts Online, Medieval and Renaissance and British Literary Manuscripts Online, c. 1660-1900

We recently added Part II: Slave Trade in the Atlantic World to our existing Slavery and Anti-Slavery resource. Part II charts the inception of slavery in Africa and its rise throughout the Atlantic world, with particular focus on the United Kingdom, France, and the United States.  This collection features monographs and individual papers, company records, newspapers, and a variety of government documents. This collection was developed by an international editorial board with scholars specializing in European, African, Latin American/Caribbean, and United States aspects of the slave trade.

We have added Part IV: The Stuarts: James to Anne, 1603 – 1714 to our existing State Papers Online collection. Part IV completes the Papers of the Stuart period and contains volumes of State Papers from, to and about all the countries of Europe. This resource covers not only British but European History: marriage alliances, revolutions, wars and treaties, trade and commerce and, crucially, religion.

Based on the American Antiquarian Society’s collection of American broadsides and ephemera, this full-color digital edition offers fully searchable facsimile images of approximately 15,000 broadsides printed between 1820 and 1900 and 15,000 pieces of ephemera printed between 1760 and 1900.

Early American Imprints, Series I: Evans, 1639-1800 contains a large collection of books, pamphlets and broadsides published in America over a 160-year period. Early American Imprints, Series I is based on Charles Evans’ renowned “American Bibliography” and Roger Bristol’s supplement. Including more than 36,000 printed works and 2.3 million pages, Series I also offers new imprints not available in microform editions.

Early American Imprints, Series II: Shaw-Shoemaker, 1801-1819 provides a set of American books, pamphlets and broadsides published in the early part of the 19th century. It is based on the noted “American Bibliography, 1801-1819″ by Ralph R. Shaw and Richard H. Shoemaker. It contains  more than four million pages from over 36,000 items—including 1,000 catalogued new items unavailable in previous microform editions.
