An evaluation team which included members of the Library Computing Committee and key Reference Librarians has selected VuFind as the preferred Search and Discovery interface for York University Libraries. VuFind is currently being tested and used at numerous academic libraries including Yale, Stanford, Villanova and Trent Universities. VuFind recently received a Mellon Award for Technology Collaboration. With VuFind the Libraries will be able to present, in a unified environment, a variety of research resources including links to electronic journals, institutional repositories and archival collections.
Working groups will be established to guide project implementation. Late spring 2009 is the target for a pilot system to be used for testing functionality, the user interface and usability. It is expected that the system will be ready for the start of the 2009-2010 academic year.
We anticipate that the York Community will agree with one influential commentator on library technology when he says that VuFind Rocks the House.
2009 is York’s fiftieth anniversary! Many celebrations are planned for this year and there will be a lot of York history on display at the library and archives and elsewhere around the campus.
Just published is York University: The Way Must Be Tried by Michael Horn, a history of this university. The library has many copies available, and you can buy one at the bookstore.
