Abstract:A landmark piece of photojournalism is celebrated in this look at the courageous work of W. Eugene Smith and his wife Aileen in uncovering an environmental scandal in the fishing villages around the bay of Minamata in southern Japan. The Smiths brought to international attention how dumping by the Chisso chemical factory led to methyl-mercury fish poisoning that resulted in death and disfigurement for the people of the region. The Smiths discuss their work with James Hughes and William Pierce and show pictures of the tragedy as it unfolded.
