Background Information

Picking a Topic

Find something you’re interested, make sure it’s not too general or too specific. Have a plan B.

My topic: Samuel R. Delany & images of sexuality

Plan b:  blade runner & alien // alienation in science fiction

Finding Books

  • Do a keyword search in Library Catalogue:
    • science fiction and history and criticism
    • science fiction and american history and criticism
    • example or author or subject: Dick, Philip k or Delany, Samuel R
  • Google Books Search — Can be a good way to find relevant books.
    • Aliens Cameron alienation
  • RACER — if you want to borrow a book we don’t have!

Finding Articles

These online databases can also be found in the eResources Quick Links box on the library home page.

Find Articles by Subject will give more databases to search — in Film and Literature and Science….

All the article databases are very similar. Here are some sample keyword searches:

  • delany and triton
  • delany and sexuality
  • delany and (sex or sexuality or body)
  • science fiction and images and (sex or sexuality or body or masculinity)
  • Philip K Dick and Ubik
  • dick and high castle
  • science fiction and history
  • alternate history
  • science fiction or sci fi or scifi or sf
  • alienation
  • Philip k dick and high castle
  • blade runner
  • cameron and aliens
  • cameron and alien
  • cameron and aliens and sex

Using the Internet Wisely

  • Using Google as a scholarly research tool:
    • Find a good portal site
    • remember: who, why and when
  • Google Scholar — can be pretty good but a little lacking in articles on literature and film. Can be a good way to find relevant books.
