- Summary:
-
A report on a treaty that had been recently upheld by the court in Canada. Treaty 8 was signed in 1899 and dealt with education, land and fishing rights. The descendants of the people who signed the treaty say that there was also a promise that they would not have to pay taxes, but that had not been written into the treaty. A judge upheld the treaty but it is on appeal. This story focuses on the affect the treaty would have on native and non-native peoples. The treaty will not cover everyone of native descent, and there is worry that if the appeal fails there might be trouble within families as well as outside the family within the population.
