Reviewing the Paragraphs

Consider each paragraph of your draft in isolation to ensure that each has a central point that clearly relates to the overall purpose of the essay. If necessary, add a sentence that states explicitly how the paragraph connects to other portions of the essay.

If a paragraph seems to be making two or more points, consider breaking it into separate paragraphs for each point. A good test for your paragraphs is whether you can assign a single key word to each paragraph.

If a paragraph in your draft seems disconnected or tangential, you should not be reluctant to remove it. However, you may wish to consider ways to expand and better connect the paragraph to your essay’s purpose.
