Celebrating the UN's Year of Sustainable Tourism and Development

The United Nations has announced that 2017 is the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development: “The declaration by the UN of 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development is a unique opportunity to advance the contribution of the tourism sector to the three pillars of sustainability – economic, social and environmental, while raising awareness of the true dimensions of a sector which is often undervalued” (United Nations, Press Release No.: 15094, para 2).

To commemorate this move, the Bronfman Business Library is showcasing its collection on sustainable tourism, sustainable development, and social entrepreneurship. Our latest book display highlights a number of different aspects of these fascinating topics, ranging from marketing for global tourism, investment in developing countries, tourism as a facet of international business, the transformative nature of tourism and social entrepreneurship, and exploring the links between culture, tourism, the environment and global change. Overall, this book display points to the ways that sustainable tourism, sustainable development and social entrepreneurship can enact systemic change on a global scale.

Some of the highlights of this book display include:

  • Tourism, recreation, and sustainability : linking culture and the environment, edited by Stephen F. McCool and R. Neil Moisey
    • Presenting a discussion by leading contributors on the impacts of tourism on local culture and the environment, this edition moves forward the debates in sustainable tourism, covering new locations, concepts and perspectives, and new case studies providing a global outlook for a universal issue.
  • Tourism and mobilities : local-global connections, edited by Peter M. Burns and Marina Novelli
    • Bringing together theoretical and practical issues, this edited volume analyses tourism’s wider role as an agent for the mobile modern population of the world. Themes range from postmodern youth and independent mobility to theoretical texts on hypermobility and citizenship within global space and mobility, media and citizenship. Offering a thought-provoking examination of modern tourism, this will be an important text for students of tourism and human geography as well as tourism professionals.
  •  Social entrepreneurship : to act as if and make a difference, by Björn Bjerke, Mathias Karlsson
    • This book examines some social entrepreneurs in practice in several countries while concentrating on entrepreneurs in the third sector. The authors call them citizen entrepreneurs. Such people are not only becoming more common but also more necessary in the world of today. Entrepreneurs are seen as people who aim `to act as if and make a difference', that is, who act out of the ordinary and come up with noticeable solutions to various problems without being restricted by existing resources or possibilities.
  •  International business and tourism : global issues, contemporary interactions, edited by Tim Coles and C. Michael Hall
    • Whether it’s bungee jumping in Queenstown or visiting the Guinness factory in Dublin, where we travel – and what we do when we get there - has changed significantly in the past twenty years. This innovative volume explores what is possibly the most unrecognized of international service industries, placing tourism in the context of contemporary globalization and trade-in services. It provides new perspectives on tourism as a form of international business, and the implications for firms, the state and individuals.
