{"id":7295,"date":"2016-02-01T15:09:04","date_gmt":"2016-02-01T20:09:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/web\/?page_id=7295"},"modified":"2023-06-14T15:06:15","modified_gmt":"2023-06-14T19:06:15","slug":"author","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/web\/research-metrics\/author\/","title":{"rendered":"Author metrics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Author impact metrics purport to measure an author's impact relative to other authors working in similar fields.<\/p>\n<h2>Common metrics<\/h2>\n<p>Several metrics are available for measuring <a href=\"http:\/\/hlwiki.slais.ubc.ca\/index.php\/Author_impact_metrics\">author impact<\/a>\u00a0including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>h-index: the most commonly used index to demonstrate author impact, it is derived from calculating the number of articles published (h) that have been cited at least h times. So an author h-index of 10 means that the author has published 10 articles that have been cited at least 10 times.<\/li>\n<li>g-index: a modification of the h-index that gives more weight to highly-cited articles.<\/li>\n<li>i10-index: developed by Google Scholar, the author i10-index is the number of articles published by an author that have received at least 10 citations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While potentially useful, these metrics are controversial. See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/web\/research-metrics\/issues\/\">limitations of bibliometrics<\/a>\u00a0for more information.<\/p>\n<h2>Common tools<\/h2>\n<p>Each tool measures author impact based upon the publications it indexes. As a result, different tools will provide different results and it is advisable that you check more than one. Common tools that provide author impact metrics include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Harzing's Publish or Perish (free <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harzing.com\/resources\/publish-or-perish\">download\/installation<\/a>)\n<ul>\n<li>Provides a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.harzing.com\/pophelp\/metrics.htm\">myriad of metrics<\/a>, including h-index, g-index, total citation, number of citation per author<\/li>\n<li>Data is pulled from Google Scholar, Scopus, Semantic Scholar and more.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/web\/research-metrics\/tools\/publish-or-perish\/\">More information about Publish or Perish<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Google Scholar\n<ul>\n<li>Provides h-index and i10-index. Requires author to set up a Google Scholar profile.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/web\/research-metrics\/tools\/google-scholar\/\">More information about Google Scholar<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/eresolver\/?id=1194128\">Scopus<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>Provides h-index, sum of times cited, and citations per year.
