It is important to understand how scholarly publishing in a given field works and how the metrics are constructed. What works in biology can't be applied to history. See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/web\/research-metrics\/issues\/\">Limitations of bibliometrics<\/a> for more.<\/p>\n<h2>Common tools<\/h2>\n<p>Each tool measures the relative impact of journals for which it provides indexing. Not all journals are tracked by these tools so consulting more than one tool is advised.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/eresolver\/?id=65626\">Journal Citation Reports<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>Based on Web of Science data. See <a href=\"http:\/\/wokinfo.com\/products_tools\/multidisciplinary\/webofscience\/\" target=\"_blank\">content included<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Content includes Sciences and Social Sciences.<\/li>\n<li>Ranks journals with several factors: impact, five-year impact, total cites, Eigenfactor metrics.<\/li>\n<li>See the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLM1kuGdwRdGnkuPNk9xw6xZUdi7iwDxAW\">training videos<\/a>\u00a0for guidance on the various ways to use Journal Citation Reports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Eigenfactor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eigenfactor.org\/projects\/journalRank\/journalsearch.php\">Eigenfactor<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>Based on Web of Science\/Journal Citation Reports data.<\/li>\n<li>Provides two metrics: Eigenfactor (measure of the journal's total importance to the scientific community) and Article Influence (measure of the average influence of each of a journal's articles over the first five years after publication).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scimagojr.com\/\">SJR: SCImago Journal &amp; Country Rank<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>Based on Scopus data.
