{"id":1757,"date":"2014-02-07T15:42:23","date_gmt":"2014-02-07T15:42:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/web\/?p=1757"},"modified":"2014-02-07T15:42:23","modified_gmt":"2014-02-07T15:42:23","slug":"canadas-leading-black-theatre-company-archives-its-materials-at-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/web\/blog\/2014\/02\/07\/canadas-leading-black-theatre-company-archives-its-materials-at-york\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada\u2019s leading black theatre company archives its materials at York"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>Feb. 7, 2013 -<\/strong> One of the first things Melanie Hague did after Obsidian Theatre Company hired her in 2011 was pack the posters, programs, photos, stage managers\u2019 books and grant records into boxes and donate them to York\u2019s Clara Thomas Archives and Special Collections.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/BlackMedeaplaybill.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1759 alignright\" alt=\"BlackMedeaplaybill\" src=\"http:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/BlackMedeaplaybill.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/BlackMedeaplaybill.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/BlackMedeaplaybill-193x300.jpg 193w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Hague had just graduated with a master\u2019s of fine arts in theatre and the imperative of her playwriting professor, Judith Rudakoff, still rang in her ears: If you work for a theatre company, make sure it archives its materials!<\/p>\n<p>Obsidian was not the first company devoted to bringing black voices to Canada\u2019s stage. But it would be almost impossible to find out anything about its predecessors, Theatre Fountainhead and the Black Theatre Company, because nobody had saved their materials, says Hague. She would not let that happen to Obsidian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is about creating our own history,\u201d says Hague, who is Obsidian\u2019s artist development coordinator. \u201cIt needs to be created now, so people know what we did, can find out what we did and be inspired to pursue their own craft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are some real jewels,\u201d she says, in the Obsidian collection. For instance, Alison Sealy-Smith, one of 13 Obsidian founders and its first artistic director, left handwritten minutes of the first meeting. \u201cShe didn\u2019t believe in computers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guelph University has a major Canadian theatre archive, but Obsidian chose to donate its materials to York. The University is closer and more accessible to York and other Toronto-based theatre history students, she says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2014\/02\/Adventuresofablackgirl.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God playbill\" src=\"http:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2014\/02\/Adventuresofablackgirl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"162\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God playbill<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fonds consists of 2.2 metres of materials and 180 photographs spanning 12 seasons from 1999 to 2010. They include posters, programs, costume sketches from every play produced by the company \u2013 often in partnership with other companies \u2013 from the inaugural play, <i>Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God<\/i> in 1999 to <i>Ruined <\/i>in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess it\u2019s time we sent in more stuff,\u201d remarks founding member Philip Akin, Obsidian\u2019s artistic director since 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Akin and 12 other black actors founded Obsidian in 1999. \u201cWe weren\u2019t seeing ourselves on Canadian stages,\u201d he says. \u201cWe were overwhelmed by the oppressive Caucasian look of Canadian theatre.\u201d In movies, young black men typically played pimps, punks and drug addicts, and older men played cops, lawyers and judges \u2013 or the incestuous stepfather. \u201cWe started Obsidian in the hopes that we would be able to get our stories on deck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The founders chose \u201cobsidian\u201d for the company\u2019s name because the first mirrors were made of this shiny black volcanic rock. \u201cReflections in black\u201d became the company\u2019s tag line.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2014\/02\/IntimateApparel-costume1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"Intimate Apparel costume sketch\" src=\"http:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2014\/02\/IntimateApparel-costume1.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Intimate Apparel costume sketch<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of some 25 productions, a highlight was the production of <i>Intimate Apparel<\/i>, by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage, in the fall of 2010. Directed by Akin, the play<i> <\/i>was about a 35-year-old seamstress in 1905 and her relationship with four other people. \u201cIt showed a slice of black life that you would not normally see up here. Esther was just a working woman. The play was not about drugs, guns or slavery but about human beings,\u201d said Akin. <i>Intimate Apparel <\/i>opened at Berkley Theatre, was picked up by Canada Stage, toured to the Citadel Theatre in Halifax, then to Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver. \u201cThat wouldn\u2019t have happened without Obsidian,\u201d says Akin, \u201cbecause nobody else would have picked up that play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, Akin estimates that 12 to 14 per cent of actors on Toronto stages are non-white. Since Obsidian was founded, several more culturally diverse theatre companies have been formed. Obsidian doesn\u2019t have its own physical stage, but partners with other Toronto theatres to mount productions. \u201cWe will keep doing what we are doing \u2013 developing new plays, new playwrights and training new actors,\u201d says Akin.
