Learn more with the Libraries\u2019 Infographic, Guide &amp; Mini-Course"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Stephanie Quail<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may have heard the terms&nbsp;<strong>open education (OE)<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>open educational resources (OER)<\/strong>&nbsp;over the last few years. This global movement has changed the way instructors use educational resources in the classroom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OER are free teaching and learning resources that are created by instructors and other experts and use open licences, such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Creative Commons licences<\/a>. Because OER use open licences, individuals using the resources are provided with a full range of re-use permissions, commonly known as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/opencontent.org\/definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5Rs (Retain, Reuse, Revise, Remix, and Redistribute)<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These permissions enable faculty and instructors to&nbsp;<strong>not only&nbsp;<\/strong>use the resource for<strong>&nbsp;free,<\/strong>&nbsp;but also&nbsp;<strong>revise or remix&nbsp;<\/strong>the resource to create&nbsp;<strong>tailored content&nbsp;<\/strong>for their specific teaching or learning context.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using OER in the classroom not only helps save students money and provide them with access to course learning materials from the first day of classes, but it also allows&nbsp;<strong>instructors&nbsp;<\/strong>to&nbsp;<strong>customize the resources<\/strong>&nbsp;and make them more&nbsp;<strong>relevant, inclusive and accessible for students.<\/strong>&nbsp;For example, an instructor could use an open textbook in their course and update the case studies so they incorporate local issues that are more engaging for their students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Libraries have created three resources to help you learn more about OER and OE and incorporate them into your classroom:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Support for Open Educational Infographic<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-62f2984b749a6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-62f2984b749a6.png\" alt=\"infographic to show support for open educational practices.\" class=\"wp-image-22952\" width=\"1110\" height=\"624\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-62f2984b749a6.png 1920w, https:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-62f2984b749a6-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-62f2984b749a6-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.library.yorku.ca\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-62f2984b749a6-1536x864.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1110px) 100vw, 1110px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Libraries\u2019&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/h5pstudio.ecampusontario.ca\/content\/42749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Support for Open Educational Practices infographic<\/a>&nbsp;was developed using H5P, an open-source software. Any faculty member or instructor with a YorkU email address can use&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/h5pstudio.ecampusontario.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eCampusOntario\u2019s instance of H5P<\/a>&nbsp;to create a variety of interactive resources.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By viewing the infographic, you will learn more about:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why OE is important&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What OER are&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Examples of OER&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And how the Libraries can help you get started on your OER journey!&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OER Guide<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Libraries have also created an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/researchguides.library.yorku.ca\/OER\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OER guide<\/a>&nbsp;that lists some of the best repositories to locate OER that cover a wide range of course needs. For example, the guide lists the best ways to find:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open textbooks&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open course materials, like slide decks, lesson plans, and modules&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Openly licensed images, slide deck templates, icons, and media&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mini-Course for Faculty and Instructors on OER<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, if you\u2019ve read through the above resources and are ready to further explore OER and incorporate these practices into your classroom, you may want to enroll in the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/scottlibrary.apps01.yorku.ca\/machform\/view.php?id=134299\" target=\"_blank\">Libraries\u2019 4-week mini-course on open education.<\/a>&nbsp;This course covers the following topics:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>OER 101&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copyright and Creative Commons licences&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finding &amp; Evaluating OER&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating &amp; Adapting OER&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The course is offered in two formats:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A fully asynchronous section, which includes four pre-recorded lectures and short, simple assignments are completed via eClass.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A synchronous Zoom section where students attend four live Zoom classes and complete short, simple assignments via eClass.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is anticipated that participants will spend about 6-10 hours in total completing these courses. Register today for one of the November 2022 sections!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, if you\u2019d like to be involved in campus initiatives that support OE and OER usage and creation at York, check out&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/oesc.library.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">York\u2019s Open Education Steering Committee (OESC)<\/a>.
