As part of ongoing space renewal efforts, York University Libraries has initiated a weeding project at the Steacie Science and Engineering Library. We are undertaking this work to improve the usability of our collections and to create more study space. This project is part of a broader effort to ensure that our library spaces and services are responsive to new ways of learning, collaborating, and interacting with library collections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why are we doing this?<\/em> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

York University Libraries are currently facing significant space constraints and pressures on our capacity for print processing.  Use of our print collections has also steadily declined. By carefully weeding items that are available electronically on stable platforms and or are no longer needed locally, we can free up space, reduce redundancy, and support long-term stewardship of our collections.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

How are we doing this?<\/em> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Weeding criteria have been carefully developed by a team of librarians in consideration of evolving teaching and research needs. In keeping with our e-preferred acquisition model, items that are reproduced in their entirety in a stable digital format will be weeded along with items that are outdated, obsolete, or are in poor condition. Infrequently used items that do not reflect York\u2019s current or anticipated curriculum and are readily available from other libraries<\/a> are also being considered for withdrawal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are undertaking this work carefully to ensure alignment with our collection guidelines and with best practices in academic libraries.  All items being considered for removal have been reviewed by the appropriate subject librarian(s), and quality control processes are in place to ensure that print titles that are still needed remain in the collection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
