Suggestions for Purchase

All suggestions are reviewed with attention to cost, availability and relevance to our collection development policy. Please check Omni before making a suggestion — we may already have what you need!

Suggestions can be made using our suggestion form or via our team email at yul_cda@yorku.ca. This email is monitored Monday to Friday and you can expect a response within two business days.

A few reminders:

  • eBooks often have limits on the number of users who can access them at one time. Limits are set by the publisher. While we try to purchase unlimited users for all eBooks, we are often limited to one or three at a time. Note that this refers to simultaneous users, so this is usually enough to meet demand for most courses.
  • eTextbooks: Acquiring electronic versions of textbooks can be difficult for the Libraries because many textbook publishers only sell to individuals. For more information, see the statement released by librarians at the University of Guelph on the challenges of acquiring commercial eTextbooks.
  • Trade and popular eBooks are not always available on platforms that work in the academic environment. eBooks that are sold for personal devices such as a Kindle or Kobo may not be available for purchase by libraries.
  • Streaming Video: We have responded to the increased demand for streaming video by adding many new platforms and working with filmmakers to license digital versions for classroom use. However, not all films are available in streaming format.

Please free to reach out to the collections team at yul_cda@yorku.ca with any questions about library materials. Note that all inquiries about posting content to your eClass site should continue to be directed to the copyright office (copy@yorku.ca).
