Introduction to YorkSpace

YorkSpace is an open access repository that enables York community members to disseminate and preserve their scholarly works in an institutional context. Each submission includes a digital copy of your scholarly work that can be made available to York and the global scholarly community permanently, without access restrictions.

The purpose of YorkSpace is to disseminate open access scholarship produced by York faculty, students, and staff, as well as York affiliated community members. YorkSpace is designed to be a permanent site of preservation, and as such, does not host files created for temporary purposes (i.e., temporary questions/files for course examination, meeting agendas, etc.). YorkSpace supports the York University Senate Policy on Open Access by acting as an open access repository of works created by York University community members.

Benefits of YorkSpace

  • Increased visibility: YorkSpace is indexed by major search engines, such as Google and Google Scholar, which increases the discoverability of your work.
  • Reliable links: YorkSpace assigns permanent URLs known as Handles to each item. These unique links will never change and will provide a stable location for your work.
  • Support for various digital objects: YorkSpace accepts multiple file formats such as text, audio, video, and more. Please review our Accepted File Types section of the YorkSpace Procedures webpage for more information on best practices.
  • Authors Retain Copyright: York University Libraries requires authors to agree to the YorkSpace Non-Exclusive Distribution License prior to submitting work on YorkSpace. Under this agreement, authors retain copyright of their work.

How to Submit

Option 1: Self Deposit

If you have a substantial number of items that need to be deposited to YorkSpace, you may choose the self-submit option. If you would like to choose the self-submit option, please contact for training. Please review the Submitter section of the YorkSpace Procedures webpage for more details.

Option 2: Library Support for Depositing

We offer a service called Mediated Deposit, which allows authors to request deposit assistance from York University Libraries for up to five articles per submission. YorkSpace staff members will submit these items on an author's behalf. Please allow YorkSpace staff up to one month to deposit articles on your behalf. If you would like to take advantage of this service, please fill out YorkSpace Mediated Deposit Form. Please contact should you have any questions or concerns regarding this service.

For more information about the types of works that can be submitted to YorkSpace, please see our YorkSpace Procedures webpage.
